Popping noise from valve

Hey n00b here. did some searching but didnt find what I was looking for. I have been using the cpap for about 2 weeks now with little success other than not snoring. By all means I am not giving up.
This morning my wife and I woke up to the mask making a popping noise that sounded like it was coming from the valve. It sounded like when you would take your palm and hit it on the end of a pipe. very strange. I have noticed that sometimes when I lay down at first and the machine is on the ramp mode, that the mask will suck hard to my face when I breathe. I dont know if this is all related and there is a problem with the mask or valve.
Any help would be great!

dont know about the popping but you should try getting off to sleep without the ramp
the ramp to reduce pressure can be more trouble than its worth

We are all newbies. Even after a year, things still happen to me from time to time with no explanation. For example, a few weeks ago, I had a night where I had a zillion events. The night before and following night were normal, and I didn't do anything different on any of those nights. It just happens from time to time, so I always feel like a n00b.

Not snoring indicates that you are at least on the right track. That is huge by itself. Maybe you can elaborate more on what you mean by "little success". It could be that your body is still adapting, or it could be that you have a pretty big sleep debt to pay back. Your machine does appear to be data-capable, so get what you need for software or computer cables so you can read the data and post your data plots. In the mean time, it would be good to track your daily AHI and leak numbers from the screen and menus on your machine. Those would be helpful in trying to speculate on how you are doing and what issues you are dealing with.

I think what I mean when I say little success, is that I'm still really tried. But I think after years of not sleeping, 2 weeks is not enough time to see real results. I am very optimistic about this, just want sleep I go back to the sleep center on the 20th and they will review all the data and I will see what they have to say and go from there.

Not for sure exactly which mask you are referring to.
I know when I cleaned my mask and moved the one-way valve the wrong side it popped. Try moving that piece of silicone flap with a pencil before you go to sleep to see if that helps.

It sounds to me like you have insufficient pressure coming from the machine to close the valve and keep it closed.
This could easily be the case at the beginning of a ramp period.
My mask does this before I start my session. Its the valve flap opening and closing over and over.
Try turning off the ramp and see it it goes away.

thanks everyone. I think there was some water in the tube. and the popping came before I woke up in the am so it was not on the ramp mode at that time. the tube ripped so I wasn't able to wear it this weekend. I will stop and get a new hose today and see if this noise continues or if it was from the water.

Hi,
I just started trying out the Quattro. I get a great seal with the mask, no leaks, but I as well get a sound from the valve flapping open and closed with every exhalation...more like like a fluttering sound rather than popping. This usually occurs before I wake up in the morning. I am wondering if this is due to too moisture at the valve as someone else mentioned, or due to a defective valve??

Another source of a popping sound (though not from the valve) is rainout in the hose. If this could be the case, then try keeping your hose under your covers as much as possible. Also, if using a heated humidifier, try lowering your heat setting.

I agree with this assessment. The valve is probably "popping" because that's the only thing between the machine and you that will move when the water is trying to move through the hose with the air pushing it. Lowering the heat or warming/insulating the hose are a couple of possibilities for alleviating the problem.

Hi,
This makes sense as each time it happened, I disconnected the hose from my mask for a few seconds and shook the hose and could hear water sloshing back down into the humidifier. I didn't clue in as I was half asleep. Will lower the heat. Thank you.

One important thing you said was the mask sucks to your face very hard when you try to inhale. That should not happen as the mask should have a safety on it incase the power goes out. That is called an anti-asphyxiation valve and I thought all but one or two older masks had them on them. If you are able to suck the mask to your face, something is wrong. When you go to your DME to get a new hose take your mask and ask them to look at it. Someone their may have cleaned it and put it together wrong or you possibly put something in wrong. We have all done that once.

That was stated by the original poster of this thread......not Ms.Snuffleupagus. However, that condition would probably occur when the water filled the hose and the air wasn't able to get through......no air....nothing to inhale.
