If you sleep on a pillow designed for XPAP users...

I am looking for opinions on various bed pillows specifically designed for XPAP users. I would like to buy one for my DH so that he doesn't have to continuously shift his sleeping pillows around to get them situated so they don't interfere with his mask. Currently, he's using the Opus 360 nasal pillows mask which has the hose that goes straight up the front and over his forehead. Last night was his first night with this mask, and it looks promising. But there are times when his sleeping pillow arrangement interferes with the air vents in his mask, causing increased noise and, it would seem, reduced therapy benefits.

I'd like to find him a sleeping pillow that supports his head and neck comfortably and has strategically placed indentations to allow the mask more positional freedom and eliminates pillow interference that could displace a good seal. I have seen some online, but would really like to hear comments from forum members who have found a specific sleeping pillow design that has enhanced their sleeping experience.

I alternate between a foam contour pillow and buckwheat pillow. In my opinion, if you have a good seal...and you are not a restless sleeper...any pillow will do the job. I sleep on my left side on the right edge of the pillow with most of the mask and hose off of the pillow on the right side. During the night I tend to turn over on my stomach without loosing the seal. If your DH has just started with CPAP, don't assume that he will need a special pillow...many here have spent many $$$ without success.

You can spend alot of money on cpap and cpap pillows. Or you can make your own pillows. Spend some time reading and searching before you do.

Search for posts by Carbonman who showed pictures of how he made cutouts to a memory foam pillow to fit him. And "pjwalman" who had a template to make a pillow in the shape of an 'H' that you could place on top on any pillow to allow for the mask. If you are handy those should help.

I use a foam contour pillow that accommodates my Hybrid mask and hose very well. Not specifically for CPAP. I think I got mine at Target for about $12. Here's what it looks like:

Most people use this pillow incorrectly. First of all this pillow should be used for sleeping on your back. But in any case the thickest portion should go under your neck to help keep your airway open. Using this pillow upsidedown will move your chin closer to your neck, this closes more of your airway. Try it

Thanks, LSAT--love your username. Actually, he's been on for about ten years, but I've only recently become aware of these pillows. He does shift positions frequently during the night, so I thought a more comfortable pillow might help.

I'm a side sleeper and pillow slasher.
I use UM FFM, exclusively.
I've tried every pillow out there.....
this is the best, IMNSHO.
Memory foam pillow purchased wherever you can find it on sale,
modified to my specifications. Side cutouts fit the mask,
cutout in the middle fits onto your shoulder to hold it in place.
Works very well.

Finding the best pillow is a very individual choice. I use a small buckwheat hull pillow with about 1/3 of the hulls removed. It forms to the shape I want & stays in that shape, even though I tend to flop around quite a bit. Good luck in your search!

I like it because it is firm and can be shaped to fit your comfort. You can adjust the amount of buckwheat. I switch off between the Regenisis pillow and a foam contour pillow.

It crunched continually--I returned it the very next day.
Never even got to sleep.
Unless you are deaf, it's a really bad idea.
