Best tape for taping mouth shut?

Post by anonfan1432 » Tue Sep 09, 2014 10:44 am

Hello
So I have looked around for ways to improve my sleep apnea.
I have read around that people are taping their mouth shut to prevent mouth breathing.

I was originally planning on using scotch tape or electrical tape, but it appears there is special tape for this purpose?
Like medical tape?

What is the best brand?

Amazon has a bunch of nexcare medical tapes, are they good?

Please recommend something that is good for sensitive skin; my skin gets dry and breaks out very easily.
Thanks!

Hands down 2" Painters tape. It won't leave a residue or tear your skin off when you try to remove it.

It would be more helpful if you could post your equipment so advice could be better tailored to you needs.

I personally didn't like the painter's tape because I thought the odor of the adhesive smelled toxic. I'm using the CVS drugstore brand of a 2" wide paper tape like nexcare makes. Generic brands are a little less expensive. This is the gentlest adhesive I've found. I fold down a corner to easily grip it the next morning for removal. If my skin becomes irritated, I apply a little generic lanolin cream in the morning, which is also available at the drugstore.

If you drool at all through your lips when the tape is in place, the tape will loosen. Try rolling your lips inward toward your mouth to prevent this when applying the tape.

If you find the paper tape works for you, then the multiple packs by nexcare on Amazon may save you some money.

I use this tape:

And sometimes I have used Nexcare's paper tape instead, as I believe someone already mentioned.

I know joe pechi uses ductape to keep mouths shut in the mob movies but have you thought about getting a chin strap http://www.amazon.com/Respironics-Premi ... chin+strap

I have used all kinds of tape. The problem for me is that even with TAPE over my mouth, the air in my mouth makes my cheeks puffy or I find I am swallowing the air. I think also, you have to be very cautious, because if the power goes out and there is a power outage, and your mouth is taped shut, it sounds dangerous to me too. I use a chin strap and almost every morning I find my mouth totally dry. I know my lips opened a little at night, or most of the night, but my AHI is not too bad. The tape just never worked for me. The air for me, still accumulated in my cheeks.

im thinking of chin strap AND tape.
I am a mouth breather not only sleeping but in regular life as well

It will take a lot of conscious effort and time to correct this to nose breathing without conscious thinking about it.

Anyone else use strap AND tape?

It does take time but you can do it....focus on breathing thru your nose during the day.

Did I miss what kind of mask are you using?

The type of tape needed may depend on tenderness of skin and the presence of facial hair.
Chin Up strips (tm) allow for emergency breathing, while making regular mouth breathing difficult,
I made custom patterns (for my small face), so I could cut my own strips out of delicate painters' tape.
(Missing image held hostage by GREEDY photobucket--see chin up strips for similar pic.)
To apply, I stick the center next to the color line on my lower lip, and pull it up
like a bulldog before sticking the ends on my cheeks.

A little Honey (Pure) on the lips at bedtime is like glue, apply to dry lips like you would lip balm, and use a chin strap to keep your jaw closed.

Years and years ago I used tape (duct tape) on my lips.

This is a bit off topic, but I'd like to relate my current experience with Nexcare gentle paper tape. I had cataract surgery last week, and for the first week I have to wear a metal shield over my eye at night for protection. They gave me a roll of this stuff when I left the hospital. Next day I went for a post-op visit and the tech who took the shield off pulled the tape off so slowly I couldn't stand it; it's very painful on removal. Anyway, doc told me how to apply the shield in a way that shouldn't affect my mask (it doesn't) and said one strip across it from cheek to forehead is enough. Next morning, come to take the shield off, and boy, taking it off quickly even hurts! Thank goodness I only have three more nights to wear the patch! The surgery, on the other hand, was a piece of cake!
