Weight loss to get rid of sleep apnea?
Re: Weight loss to get rid of sleep apnea?
Weight loss does get rid of the OSA for some people. My daughter lost 100pds + and no longer has Sleep Apnea. The only way to find out is lose it and get retested. Either way you come out ahead if you lose the excess weight.

Get the best fitting mask, or two that almost fit (so you can swap).
Also get the machine with features and algorithms to give you the best treatment.
(FULL DATA--you never know how much you need until you discover you've been rooked)
Now settle in and use your imagination, fighter pilot, astronaut, or bondage freak.
CPAP is not giving up to your mortality--it's fighting it tooth and nail!
I was NEVER able to lose weight before cpap, it's still difficult, but with cpap it's POSSIBLE!

Re: Weight loss to get rid of sleep apnea?
Keep in mind that finding a person who no longer uses CPAP hanging out on this forum often enough to run across your thread is likely going to be a real exception. Unless they were around enough to build relationships here or are on a mission, they're probably out enjoying life. I personally know someone whose sleep apnea appeared to resolve after she lost weight. I say appeared because I observed her sleeping fairly often and there was a marked difference in how she sounded and no visible signs of distress. Her weight loss was not by intent so getting a sleep study wasn't on her radar. Good luck.

That's how I felt, too. Every journey begins with a single step. So when are you going to take that step?ElvishKnight wrote:I need to lose about a Billion Pounds!

Re: Weight loss to get rid of sleep apnea?
Thanks for all the answers. I had the sleep study last night so that was my first meeting with a CPAP machine. I barely slept at all and it was a pretty awful night. But I'm sure you get used to it and it gets better.
I hear what you are all saying. I understand I am going through some process to get to accept that I am going to be strapped to a machine every night most likely for the rest of my life. My question was about weight loss because I think that my sleep apnea started when I gained weight some 6-7 years ago. I guess I will:
1) get acquainted with the CPAP machine
2) hopefully get some good sleep and finally feel like I have some energy
3) get on a diet and start working out like I haven't in a long time.
Regarding diets, I really recommend the Dukan Diet. It works really really well. I know many people who lost a lot of weight and never gained it back.
Cheers,

Remember that the weight gain was as likely because of OSA as the other way around.
