a family member of mine is wondering whether they have sleep apnea.

costs for a sleep test would be prohibitive.

if they used my cpap machine for a night, could the results show whether they have sleep apnea or not? thanks

It has been done many times, and successfully.
Others will chime in with directions.
Lab studies are expensive; even home studies may be out of reach.
Do what you can with what you have.

If you do it and get a positive, you have sleep apnea. If you do it and get a negative, you don't know. In other words, the number of false negatives is significant.

I did it with two of my kids. I say kids.... but they were over 20 years old. They slept with the machine, and both AHI's were over 1, even with the mask. This was several years ago, and they still use therapy. They feel much better and display the positive effects of successful therapy treatment.
