Biting my tongue

Post by Roman Hokie » Tue Nov 09, 2010 10:36 am

No, not figuratively. I've noticed that, now that I'm no longer a mouth breather while sleeping, I bit my tongue. I wake up intermitantly throughout the night and, while there's no blood, there is pain. Before CPAP, there was no issue because my mouth and my teeth were open. However, now...

My teeth open inside my mouth and somehow my tongue gets between them. Is this experience "enjoyed" by anyone else?

I have a similar problem. My mask sits on my upper lip and pushes it between my teeth. Even though I wear a chinstrap, my jaw still opens slightly and catches my lip between the teeth just as I clomp down. Pure pain! And rude awakening. I have a bloody lip now!

A thick coating of peanut butter applied to your tongue may keep it stuck to the roof of your mouth...

While I hate to add another thing to what you have to go through each night, you may want to think about going down to a sports store and picking up a mouth guard. This will give your teeth something to bite into and protect your tongue.

No PB for me. Thanks.

I DO have a dental appliance for TMJ that I haven't worn in years. Maybe it's time to get that sucker out again.

Notwithstanding the usual advice to refrain from eating for several hours before bedtime, it might be best, at least temporarily, that you never go to bed hungry.
