Oxygen tubing connectors

Post by ClayL » Sat Nov 23, 2013 4:50 pm

My wife just started using CPAP with supplemental oxygen at night. She has rain out problems.
Resmed makes a heated hose for her S9 but to use it she has to put the oxygen adapter at the mask rather than at the machine and run the oxygen tube to the mask.

We are in our motor home in AZ for the winter . Because of space limitations the oxygen concentrator is under the dinette table. The oxygen tube has to be removed and coiled up and put out of the way in the morning. She has the tube strapped to the supply hose with hook and eye straps. Unstrapping it every morning is a pain and I would like to fabricate a short piece of tubing that can be left strapped to the mask hose.

The connectors on the existing tubes we have seem to be molded onto the tube. Are there connectors available that can pushed on the end of the tubing? If so I can cut the end off of a tube and shorten it as required.

What is the inside diameter of the O2 feed line? The lines I've seen seem to be similar to drip irrigation tubing.
You may be able to go to a home center and get fittings for a drip irrigation system that will allow you to do what you need.
Please check with an oxygen supplier to make sure that such a fix will work and that it will be safe.

Pure oxygen reacts to many things so you want to be sure not to put somethng reactive in the supply line.

Here is a possible source.

You can get different length tubing for example
Oxygen Supply Tubing 7 feet (Kink Free)
From CPAP dot com.
I lived full time in my motor home for five years, including 2 with CPAP and O2. I attached the tubing to the ceiling with Velcro and twist ties and clever routing tricks. Some people are too lazy to coil it up every day.

Hooking two hoses together would likely restrict the flow, a better solution would be to hook the O2 into a adaptor before the xpap hose. I unhook mine off the adaptor every day to keep thd O2 from intering my xpap before I shut the pump on or off. jim

I used to have several tropical fish tanks, all being airated by a single pump. I ran the air hoses to the tanks using hose connectors that are readily available at any pet store. You can find what you need, and it'll be a lot cheaper than the medical supply stores. You can also pick up air hoses by the foot to customize your oxygen setup at home.

The heated hose has to make an electrical connection to the CPAP so an adapter can't go between it and the hose.
The DME gave us several hoses of various lengths along with connectors so they can be hooked together. We have a ten ft and fifteen ft hooked together now.

Thanks for the answers everyone.
The pre made Resmed hose with an oxygen port that squid13 gave me a link to will save me from having to mess with connectors.
I looked on the Resmed site and didn't see it there. I must have missed it somehow.

Hi Clay,

Here's the another link to the product that Squid13 was referring to. Don't know why it's so hard to find it on the manufacturers sight. The item number is 36996.

Hope that helps.

This may or may not matter to you, but please be aware that the climateline hose with the oxygen port in those links is NOT the slim diameter hose. It is the 'old' style larger diameter hose. ("climateline max")

I have not seen the small diameter climateline hose with the oxygen port. It seems absurd that Resmed wouldn't make one, so maybe it's out there somewhere?

The only problem I could foresee in using any connectors that use a barb type fitting to hold the tubing is that the internal diameter of the fitting may be smaller than the internal diameter of the tubing. Whether or not this would/could restrict the flow is a question that I'm not qualified to answer, although it seems that as long as you adjust the flow to the prescribed setting, the machine may simply increase the line pressure to overcome the resistance. (up to a point.)

In the meantime, you may consider jury-rigging something together that holds onto the outside surface of the hose. Perhaps a barrel from a pen may work? Or another piece of tubing with an appropriate diameter?
“Ignorance” is not pejorative; it is simply a lack of information. “Stupidity” is an inability to utilize available information.

I have used the larger hose size with my CPAP for eight years with no problems so Lee (wife) should be able to get used to it. We will give it a try anyway.
Like you I am surprised that Resmed doesn't make a Slimline heated oxy hose. I sure don't see it and I did do an extensive search on their site.

EDIT. I just checked the heated hose without an oxygen port a friend gave her and it is the 19 mm size. She isn't having a problem with it.
