Pillows vs. Full Face Mask settings ?

Post by ejbpesca » Sun Jun 30, 2024 11:03 am

Does anyone know what switching to pillows mask setting does to AirSense 10 functions? Is pillows the correct mask setting for Evora full face masks?

I have switched to the Evora full face hybrid mask. I also want to try the AirSense F40. The F40 calls for pillows mask setting on an AirSense 10.
My AirSense has been on full face mask Evora full face hybrid use until last night. Seeing the F40 similar mask calls for pillows setting, I switched to pillows setting for the first time in 16 years of therapy.

Breathing in/out of the Evora full face with pillows setting feels as if the machine is off. I have to check for air coming out of the exhaust to make sure it is on. I do not detect air movement nor pressure in the mask inhaling or exhaling through my nose. Auto start does not function the same. I have to forcibly mouth breath for a few breaths to get the machine to start. On full face setting a slight inhale through the nose would start it.

I am wondering what is going on with the machine's function and if I have the correct setting for the Evora Full Face. I did not see a mask setting in the F. Paykel Evora instructions. The change in how breathing in/out of the mask feels is a bit strange in a good way. I have always felt air movement and the presence of pressure in the six full face masks I've used over 16 years. I feel the Evora FF mask on my face but not much more now it is one pillows setting.

Thank you,

It's more for leak calculation than anything else. If youi are using a Full Face Mask, the setting on your Airsense 10 should be Full Face unless the instructions tell you something different.

It has been suggested that the Pillows/Nasal/Full Face settings for AirSense 10 have something to do with vent flow. I'm not sure what vent flow is but the spec for the F40 at 12cm is 36/L min and the Evora Full Face 12cm 35/L min. The F40 calls for Pillows mask setting so I would think if mask settings are about vent flow then Pillows setting should be used for the Evora Full Face too.

When the Pillows setting is chosen inhaling through the Evora Full Face feels as if the AirSense is off, a strange sensation. Exhaling feels a bit difficult. Also strange. Set to Full Face these sensations are not as noticeable.

I wonder if other brands of CPAP machines also have mask type settings and still wonder how AirSense 10 mask settings affect therapy. They make breathing through an Evora feel different, but I have not detected a difference in the quality of therapy between the Full Face and Pillows settings.

The F40, unlike other full face masks from ResMed has a short narrow hose like its pillows masks.
The instructions for the F30 , which goes directly into to main hose say Full Face.
