Surly, if you are having a lot of pain from "bloating" (and it sounds like you are) you should take the machine to the medical office before 30 days is over. Tell the people at the medical office about your pain and flatulence. Ask the medical office to please set the "high pressure number" down lower.

High pressure usually is the reason for bloating and flatulence. The high pressure the machine is using part of the time is probably making you swallow air. Swallowing air is called "aerophagia". It can be very painful.

The gas you are having will not kill you, but you shouldn't have to experience such pain while you wait 30 days.

Even if you truly need a pressure of 19 some of the time, the people at the medical office might agree that it will be better for you to use less pressure for awhile, while you are first getting used to the machine.

You are doing a very good thing, getting treatment. I admire your spirit and good attitude. I hope the Medical Office can help make the treatment more comfortable for you, sooner than in 30 days.

Surly, does your machine have the word "GoodKnight" printed on top? If it has that word written on top, you can press down the letters "Go" in the word "GoodKnight" (there is a hidden button under the letters "Go") AND press down the "information access" button at the same time.

After a few seconds of holding both buttons down, the display panel on top will show you a new menu of information. Release the "Go" button and the "Information Access" button.

I don't have my Tyco machine (Puritan Bennett 420E GoodKnight autopap) now, so I can't remember what buttons you push to travel through the menu and make changes. I think each time you push the "Information Access" button by itself, it will go to a new section of the menu. If I remember correctly, you can make adjustments by using the "Ramp" button for UP and the "on/off" button for DOWN. I think you have to keep pushing the Information Access button until you go all the way through to the end of menu before the menu will close. When you see "time" on the display, I think you can then push the Information Access button to close the menu.

Perhaps someone else who has the machine will give you more precise instructions than I did.

Good luck, Surly.

Surly, you will not damage the breathing machine by changing numbers. I'm sorry I can't help you more. I don't have that machine now.

I suggest this: Go all the way through the menu in the window, write down every number, every symbol...write down everything that is in the window as you step through the menu. Make a list of what you see in the window. Don't make any changes while you do that.

Then, later, if you decide to make changes and the changes don't work well for you, you will be able to change it all back to the original settings.

If you see a number in the window that looks like it might mean the high pressure (the window might have the word "Hi" in it...but I don't remember) and if that high number says 19 or 20, that is the number you will want to bring down....perhaps bring it down to 14 or 15.

Surly, I'm not a doctor. I hope you can find someone else that knows more about how you can read the menu in the window and what you should do. Good luck.

Surly, yes...you can use any type of mask you wish with the breathing machine. I personally like all of these masks the best - the Breeze is my favorite:

Breeze with nasal pillows. (Does not cover the nose.)
I suggest you buy Large and/or Extra Large nasal pillows. Even if the "Large" size is a bit too big for your nostril holes, the Large will still fit you comfortably. Also, you will probably get a steadier fit if you wear the black strap of the Breeze like this - down very low.

Swift (does not cover the nose or eyes.) The Swift comes with all three sizes of "pillows" included. No need to worry about "which size to order".

The reason many people prefer "nasal pillows" instead of a mask that covers the nose is... nasal pillows don't leak air as badly as some nasal (covers the nose) masks. Nasal pillows are often more comfortable, too.

If you want to continue using a "nasal mask" (covers the nose) I recommend the Resmed Mirage Activa. It is very comfortable and very leakproof on most people. The straps can be worn very loosely - not tight.

I'm very happy that you are getting more comfortable treatment with the changes you made in your breathing machine, Surly. I hope everything continues getting better and better for you!

You speak English very well, Surly. If you would like to know the most common English words for your job and your machine:

book repository = library
"I work at a library."
"The library is closing. I am going home now."

breathing machine = cpap machine
(Your Tyco machine is an "autopap" machine.)
"My autopap is much easier to use now."

Many blessings to you too, Surly.
