What to do with a very old CPAP machine?

Post by dsilverman » Fri Dec 28, 2018 7:04 pm

After 15 years, I have upgraded to a brand new machine. My ResMed S7 still works well, but it is obviously very outdated. I don't want to just toss it. If I were to donate it, say to Goodwill or some other resale charity, would it be of use of use to anyone? Or should I just set it aside as a temporary backup?

If you don't have another machine, then keep that one in case your main one croaks off on a friday evening before a long weekend... (cuz that's when they like to fail).

You should, if at all possible, have a spare for everything.

How many times have you had to use an older machine as a backup?

I had to. My 2005 machine was trotted out of the closet when my 2009 machine failed in 2016. It took several weeks to get a new one.

Never, I just changed my old "TANK" out after 15 years, still works going to use it as a Go Bag unit and back-up. My replacement unit is a "APAP TANK" 13 year old but I bought it new, has less than 400 hours on it. If all else fails I have a third like machine to fall back on.

I have found out in life if you have one to use, one for Murphy, and one for his friend, Murphy won't come to visit. Murphy thrives on chaos, if you deny him that he is more likely to go on to the fool who doesn't prepare for his visits! :!: Jim

The question isn't "how many times have (I) had to use one as backup", rather "how many times have I heard of someone else's machine dying at an inopportune time", and the answer to that is fairly frequently.

Murphy aside, I just replaced my Resmed Ellite II, I would go without than use it. Works fine as a machine <2000 hrs, never worked well for me, if there is a good use for it, be happy to reduce the clutter. SO back to original question, what to do with the old machine?

Secondwindcpap.com takes old machines, checks them over and donates them.

I've never had to use my spare tire.

Do you think there's no point in keeping a spare?

Wow, you've never had to use your spare tire? I don't think I've had a car where I haven't! (Maybe one of my shorter-owned cars, memory is fuzzy).

My first new car (93 Saturn) I needed the spare in the first 5,000 miles due to pliers on otherwise-clean road.

Stuff happens, and Mr. Murphy is a real sneaky inconveniently-timed bastard, so it pays to be prepared to have a stern talk with Mr. Murphy.

Goodwill destroys donated cpap machines.
Check with the homeless shelters.
Maybe even the Red Cross--disasters happen.

Outdated? If it still blows air (which is what it's supposed to do).......keep it!
Lots of horror stories in the archives of this forum about people needing a backup/spare in the middle of the night or other times when their DME is closed.

a few months ago. My fairly new bipap must have burned a component inside the machine because the air coming out was foul and I could not tolerate even having it blow on my face let alone breath it in all night. It took 2 weeks for insurance to get me a replacement (nicer unit!), and after the first night I discovered that somewhere recently I had crossed the line and my body actually wanted to have a machine at night. I am still not 100% on that, but at the time I wanted a backup and fast. I dug through my old equipment and found a cpap with all the parts. Looking on line I learned how to reach the therapy settings and reset it to match the low end of my bipap. It worked for the remainder of the time until the new bipap arrived. I was very glad I still had it. Now I just need to get rid of all the old hoses and other junk!
