CPAP makes me cough

Post by notsleeping » Sat Mar 05, 2022 1:28 pm

I hope someone else has had this problem and can help me. I starting using a cpap (Resmed Airsense) on February 3, 2022 and after about the sixth night I developed a cough. No other symptoms and I am not sick. I stopped using it for six nights and after the second night off of it the cough stopped. I then started up again on February 21st, after seven nights the cough came back with a vengeance. The cough is non-stop, cough drops, mucinex, nothing touches calms it down in the slightest. I am completely baffled and so is my doc. The equipment is only one month old and I clean the mask daily and the hose exiting the unit weekly. I am not allergic to anything that I know of. I made it through two years of COVID and never got sick once, but this CPAP is kicking my ass. Go figure!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Paul

Need info! Need info please - is your machine an auto? Which one - 9, 10, 11, ?? At what pressure setting(s)? What model of which mask do you use?

Taking any meds? Some can cause coughing. And I hate to mention it, but have you been Covid tested - don't assume that 'just a cough' is not necessarily Omicron, maybe aggravated by Apap.

Have you had a chest xray?

Using either the humidifier of the machine or another 'room' one?

I have had this problem also. I got some relief by keeping the humidity setting as high as possible & keeping leaks to a minimum & not using any oralproducts containing alcohol before or near bedtime.Hope this is of some help.

The problem started after only 5 nights--maybe you are sensitive
to a cleaning product you use to clean your equipment.
Rinse really well, and stop using whatever it is.
Every day is too often anyway.
Many of us almost never clean our masks, with no ill effects.
I did not clean my mask, hose, etc., during CHEMO, and I am still here.

Do you take any medications? If so, what?

What is your humidity setting?

FYI: Notsleeping has not been back.
Only ONE post, possibly looking for an excuse to quit cpap.
Sorry, in good conscience, we cannot do that.

No, I’m still here. Just taking it all in. I think my expectations were too high. I expected to be sleeping like a baby after a week or two. And yes I know it takes time to adjust to it.
I appreciate all the feedback.
Not taking any meds. I will check when I get home and get the model number and all the other stuff you were asking about.
Thanks

We all expect more when starting out.
It really does take a bit longer than we expect.
Sometimes we are surprised later on with unexpected good results.
Humidity helps most of us; but some have the opposite effect.
Those may find themselves freed of the burden of feeding water to the machine.
We all have to find what works for us, and it takes patience.

I actually turned down my humidity and it seemed to help a little bit

This happens to me if I am breathing through my mouth. What mask are you using? The dryness can cause a cough throughout the day. Look into purchasing a chinstrap to keep your mouth closed. Even if you are using a full face mask you can still use a chinstrap, I have in the past because the breathing through my mouth with the full face mask can dry out my throat and I cough.

I would recommend the Ruby style chinstrap sold on cpap.com, just my two cents. I find it to be the most comfortable, I have tried almost every chinstrap.

Thanks for your response. I’m using nose pillows. I used my cpap last night for the first time in a week and woke up coughing for the first three hours I was awake. I just can’t figure out what the he’ll is causing it. Thinking about trying it without any humidity tonight. Just to see if it changes anything.

My MD and friends who use cpaps are all at a loss. I’ve sent saliva & stool samples in for testing to see if anything shows up there. I really want to use this thing because I think it helps me sleep better, but the side effects are to much. Risk Reward not worth it right now

Allergy to something in/on the mask? Anyone can be allergic to ANYthing at ANY time.

I would bet you are breathing through your mouth. Do you wake up with a dry throat and mouth? Would highly recommend trying a chinstrap.
