Strong chemical smell in the middle of the night?

Post by Guest » Sun Aug 31, 2008 9:46 pm

I woke up twice last night, with a very strong chemical smell in my mask, so much it was in my throat and I could taste it (and it made me cough and cough). It was almost tinny? I use PurSleep (spice), but this had NOTHING to do with that scent at all. Has anyone ever experienced such a thing?

I woke up UNrested and in fact, took a 3 hour nap this afternoon which is VERY rare for me. I woke up from that unrested, too, but I still have a paper to write for school, so no early bed for me.

I wouldn't have any idea what could have caused an odor like that. Did you take your mask off and determine if the odor was definitely coming from your CPAP machine? Have you checked to see if your perception of the smell of your Pur Sleep hasn't changed?

there are "unscented" products out there with masking fragrances that most people don't detect but some of us do

it can be anything what you smell - can be something in the hose, the machine, the mask, the pursleep - do you really know the chemical composition of all of these? - just because you normally don't detect this doesn't mean it isn't there - it might be your senses are finally picking up something

and please don't ask me the strange things I smell - you probably wouldn't want to know - I know spouse is tired of hearing about all of it -

but one thing you might want to hear is that when I replace the fine particle filter, I stop smelling it after 3 nights

"Unscented" products with masking scents are infuriating; if it has an added scent, it is not unscented. I have found that "unscented" Ivory shampoo has a very strong perfume scent. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and other natural product stores sell truly unscented soap and shampoo. I have also found that the peppermint and lavender essential oil scented soaps and shampoos have scents that fade quickly and gracefully.

I use my toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash before I put the mask on. Although, I get same effect you have while scuba diving if I don't control my air pressure properly through the regulator? May your pressure is set too high?

Check, after removing the whole cpap hose from the machine, if the smell is originating at the machine. Occasionally, but very rarely, an electronic component could fail, and some of them could generate very objectionable, and sometimes toxic fumes. The failure of one component like a burned up small resistor or capacitor may not prevent the machine from continuing to function almost normally. Also if the failure is a very tiny component, the bad smell may dissipate soon. Put your nose to the test very close to, all around, the machine.

My machine has smelled since day 1, and nothing I've done has alleviated it at all. I wake with the smell in my nose and throat, and I can eve taste it. It's not a pleasant smell, and my machine was new when I got it.

If anyone finds a solution to this, I'd appreciate hearing it.

I don't suppose your humidifier ran dry during the night? Mine has done that before and the smell hangs with me several days! YUCK!
