Chapped lips and full face mask

Post by hoseknows » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:01 pm

I sunburned my lips about 3 weeks ago. I've been using everything I can think of...chap stick, medicated Blistex, Vaseline, olive oil...and they are still very painful and chapped. I'm sure my CPAP isn't helping, blowing air on them all night. I turned the humidifier back on (wasn't using it due to high humidity here) and also put a piece of gause over my mouth inside the mask.

Any ideas on how to keep lips from drying out overnight? It hurts!!

Because of the fact that Lansinoh is so expensive I tried other lip balms BUT soon changed
to Lansinoh. (Lansinoh nipple cream - you will find it at the baby department)
Use a tiny bit at a time - it works!

Three weeks of pain sounds like an unusually bad sunburn. You might want to consider seeing a doctor.

Whatever you use for your lips, be aware that petroleum jelly will cause rapid breakdown of the plastics the mask is made of. Petroleum jelly is the primary ingredient in Vaseline products and the majority of other lip moisturizers.

Burt's Bees has a lip balm that contains no petroleum products. I buy its generic equivalent in a Walgreen brand for less than half the price.

Your lips will get well but I think you should visit a dermatologist in a few months to see if you have anything that might turn cancerous. This fairhaired EX-sun worshipper learned his lesson the hardway. Having a big chunk taken out of your lip is not fun.

Try straight Emu oil (if you can find it), coconut oil, or vitamin E for healing. I use a non-petroleum lip balm on my lips with my Hybrid FFM as I occasionally mouth breathe. Like the others, I'd see a dermatologist as 3 weeks is a long time for healing.
