Should all seniors of good character opt to pay full price for their meals so that other diners don't potentially have to bear the burden of higher prices to cover the senior discount program? Please, give it a rest. I've applied for the utility discount before. Had a long productive career contributing to society from the age of 14. Never bought a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol in my life. And I live in California. All this judgmental painting large groups of people with the same wide brush is just plain wrong, and certainly not conducive to community building here. Why not give people the benefit of the doubt? How could anyone here know the person is wasting their money? Maybe they're just trying to survive.
Thank you... great post!

Thank goodness we don't jail those who want to live off the means of others, the cost would be very high, and we would need the space of two more California's to build the jail on. So many Liberals and Socialists, so little Other People's Money..... Jim

We always ask for the senior discount, buy bread at the day old bread store, and cruise around in search of cheap gas.
But we have donated much food to the Matt Talbot kitchen, because their need is great.

But are you really eligible, or do you just feel old? I think the issue here is not whether to take advantage of discounts that were intended for you, its whether you should take advantage of discounts intended for others.

I am 69, the bullfrog is 70.
How old do you consider "deserving"?
Your opinion is yours, not mine.

Then by all means, use the senior discount, I certainly do. Would you have used an over 65 discount when you were 45? Is it OK to do anything as long as you don't get caught? Almost everyone games the system a little bit, but as near as I can tell the increased baseline allotment is worth about $360 a year, which seems a bit much.

It's still the same, Socialists and Liberals, love to spend other people's money! The one constant in the world. The war between the workers and the users, the problem the users have more time to breed. Jim

The one constant in this forum is you saying the same garbage OVER, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER... ad nauseam. Try stringing a few different thoughts together... if you possibly can.

Rinse and repeat, socialists and liberals have such short attention spans. Maybe if they spent less time trying to figure out new ways to spend other peoples money, they could listen, and think for a change. I know that's not in their nature. Jim

Everyone's conscience is pricked at different places. I'm not saying it is a good thing to take advantage everywhere one can. That's personal. But if an action is legal then it is upon those who make the rules to close the loopholes. We may try to measure morality and pick and choose acceptable behavior based on our own bent, but if the action is legal, beyond that it is personal opinion. Kinda like Donald Trump and his taxes. I may find his actions morally reprehensible, but the bigger problem is the system that allows loopholes big enough to drive a tanker truck through. In California one must find a doctor willing to assert that you could die without your CPAP, making it necessary to life - that's not always easy to do. Clearly this discount was intended for circumstances more dire than nightly assistance. As my doctor said, "If one can live without it all day, it is not necessary to life". The "How dangerous is it to go without CPAP?" debate is... well, debatable. There's a spectrum of scenarios. Our perspective on these things is born out of our varied life experiences. My experience was that any advantage from that legal utility discount at that time in my life when I was in survival mode did not prick my conscience. Even if it had, I would probably have pursued it anyway. That's why I was triggered about the assumption that anyone seeking the discount is wasteful with their money. We cannot know another's circumstance. I am neither liberal or socialist. Like most, I am somewhere along the political spectrum. May I never be so far to either end I lose sight of the rest of humanity.

As opposed to a group of Republicans who outright steal other people's money, skim off the top for themselves and then declare bankruptcy in their shell company to protect their personal gains. Investors lose it all. Believe me, that group has done far more harm to you.

Not going to effect me much, 1965, was the last time I lived in SuckOfornia, while it was nice at Fort Ord, the pay of $89 per month, didn't meet my families needs, The $1,000, I had saved at a real job before being drafted allowed us to eat, until I got assigned to Viet Nam, where I was raised to PFC, what a way to earn a raise. For that year I lived off $ 20 a month, everything else I was do was sent to the wife and my daughter.
I'm proud of my service, but now, not so much. If I had any idea what would be done to the country I fought for, in such a short time, it's unbelievable how fast a nation can be destroyed from within. Jim
All that, required is freely had out OPM (Other People's Money), the Sheeple's will fall in line, they fail to see they will run out of OPM, by then the Wolves are lined up for dinner.

WOW!
Totally clueless, factless, and partisan post by someone who obviously didn't bother to read anything about the Bankruptcy Laws in the U.S........who enacted them, when they were enacted, which parties passed them, etc., etc., etc.
Sorry, you got it bass-ackwards.
And, if you want to see "debtors prisons" restored, I'm afraid you're just a tad bit late.......they were abolished in 1833.
Some of our founding fathers even spent some time in them.

Bass-Ackwards, What you end up with as a product of a Socialist-Liberal Education System!

My point was that ANY group is guilty of same and if you choose to ignore what doesn't fit your mold then that's pretty sad. Thousands of workers lost their jobs due to financial shenanigans or did you somehow miss the recent recession? Also, do a little research as people being imprisoned for debt in the US is alive and well and quite common across much of the US. It's been in the papers numerous times in the last few years and not limited just to deadbeat parents. I'm done with this subject and will move on from this thread.
