Air/Water(?) trapped in ear-what now?

Post by Marietjie » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:45 am

I use the humidifier on 'pass-over'. It is summer and we have more than usual rain (humid damp weather).
Now I developed a blocked ear (trapped air or water) - should I disconnect the humidifier completely OR set it on
heating?

OR am I wrongly putting the blame on the use of a humidifier for my blocked ear?

Hi Marie,
Humidity levels certainly can influence congestion. You could try leaving the humidifier off and empty to see what your reaction is.

Far as ear pressure...is it painful? Most likely what you're describing is some air being forced into your middle ear from cpap pressure. Easing congestion should help with that issue. On a temporary basis, a decongestant can help...but for the long run, best to avoid drugs. Many cpap users use a neti pot style nasal saline irrigation to minimize congestion.

Could it be some wax buildup? Mike's ENT recommended 2-3 drops of baby oil 2x daily for a few days. We've been very conscientious about that since he's been in the oxygen chamber.

Jamis, that is what I did last night and the pressure is slightly better and thank goodness I've got no ear pain.
So that means there is no infection, I presume?
I HATE drugs but do take a tablet at bedtime (texa 10mg for allergic rhinitis, etc) - will take this tablet till
the pressure goes away.

DoriC - 10 days ago my ear was also totally blocked - went to our GP and he washed out my ear - a tiny bit of wax came out but
the ear was still blocked. My ear was better for 2-3 days and is blocked again. (Doctor prescribed cortisone (which I disposed of,
actifed and flexonase)
At that time I didn't suspect cpap pressure/humidifier to be the cause of a blocked ear.Thank you for the tip about the baby oil.
(The humidity today varies from 93 - 100% - it feels like I am walking with a brick on my head! )

If you still have the Actifed and Flonase, use it. Probably isn't an infection. Now with this new information though, things aren't as clear,

I suspect it is wax as well. I use Murine ear drops and rinsing ear syringe. Works like a charm.
