OT - Jar Opener
OT - Jar Opener
Due to weak grip strength, I am unable to open alot of jars without human assistance. Tried this jar opener, https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-O ... weak+hands without success.
If anyone has had a similar problem and found a product that worked, I would love to hear about it. Yes, I did a search on Amazon but I would still love to hear about your experiences with specific products in similar situations to mine.
Thanks!

i use this one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/7706/Jarkey-S ... Jar-Opener and this one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/7704/2-Jar-Op ... d-Grippers
both work well, the gripper is good if you just need a bit of help, the jarkey breaks the seal so it just unscrews easily. i work with the elderly and most of them have a jarkey. equally some of them just stab the lid with a knife as that breaks the seal too!

Search for “swing-a-way” on Amazon for one of the easiest. My mother has had one for nearly 50 years given to her by the bank when they opened their accounts after moving here. Still working for her at 86 years old.

Cool. Just ordered one. Thanks!
I have found that it's better to ask a Wookiee for that kind of help, if you speak the language.49er wrote:. . . without human assistance . . .
If not, here is how you say "Help me open this jar, please" in Shyriiwook: "Aaaaahnr wrrhw wuuh wrrhwrwwhw, aaahnruh," according to the online Wookiee translator. (http://www.wookietranslator.com/)*
*Please note that this is NOT an all-out endorsement of Wookiees. In fact, Doug would probably turn, coincidentally enough, to Jar Jar Binks. (https://youtu.be/y1p98VuP69k)**

Re: OT - Jar Opener
I, too, searched for a jar opener that was effective and small, yet able to deal with multiple sizes of lids. The one I found that fit the criteria best was the one posted by Diamondminek. One enourmous benefit is how little space it takes up in a drawer. The only caveat I would make is to not pry too vigorously - it can distort the lid if you pry too hard and make the lid difficult to put back on. When you get to the POP, stop. On another note, stabbing the lid is definitely something I would never recommend.Diamondminek wrote:i use this one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/7706/Jarkey-S ... Jar-Opener

Re: OT - Jar Opener
I just slam the jar on the sink or any hard surface a few times... and walla! I also have a small round rubber thingie when that doesn't work but don't remember where I bought it. Mostly it's the "slamming" that works but be careful if the jar is glass.

Re: OT - Jar Opener
I use my mother's never fail method--smack the top squarely and firmly
on the nearest solid wood surface, once or twice, never more.
The kitchen door frame usually does the trick.
If that fails, I stand the jar upside down in a half inch of very hot water for the count of 20.
Metal expands, but glass does not--and sticky gunk washes away.
If all else fails, I take it to the bullfrog for an application of testosterone.

Re: OT - Jar Opener
Have you tried an opener that releases the vaccuum. Lee Valley has one for less that $15 that hooks on one side of the lid. You press down on the end of the leaver to release the vacuum. it makes the jars easier to open with out the suction.

I have NO experience with it but this has good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007P2LAAU/re ... il_0?psc=1
I use a church key and put the pointy end under the lid, then press on the other end as a lever to pull the metal out slightly to release the vacuum. This usually permits the jar to be opened easily.
And in case someone doesn't know what a Church Key is: https://www.amazon.com/Update-Internati ... church+key A longer one will give you more leverage.

$15 seems a bit pricey, to me. Actually, you don't press down on the lever, you lift up.
Diamondminek suggested and linked to the same product in the UK in the very first response on this thread - it too, was much cheaper.

Re: OT - Jar Opener
If you just need a better grip on a jar lid, try some of these. When I was a kid, there was a company that made some heavy duty ones specifically for opening jars. Some years back, when I was in the hospital and when I had blood draws, I picked up some that they were going to throw away and asked if I could have them. No problem! Just wrap them around a lid and turn. Grips great. So, if you are going to have a blood draw or know someone in the nursing profession, ask them if you can get a few.

About a year ago, my wife bought some "universal" jar opener. It universally didn't work on just about anything!
SO, my "job" is still safe for the time being......
For some other situations, this may have potential.

While browsing Harbor Freight, I had considered buying wide grip welding clamps,
(Like vise grips) and then lining the jaws with foam and leather.

Re: OT - Jar Opener
If the rubber thing doesn't open it for you, use a bottle opener to break the seal on the jar. Haven't needed to ask anybody to open jars for me since.
Rubber bottle opener
https://www.amazon.com/Regent-Multi-Pur ... tle+opener
Old fashioned bottle opener
https://www.amazon.com/Chef-Craft-Bottl ... tle+opener
My Mom was doing the 'slam the jar on the counter' method and we told her to stop doing that because broken glass flies everywhere and the vet bill for glass in cat paws would cost too much.
Wulfman, we use the tourniquet things from my brother's frequent blood draws and wrap them around various things like handles of stuff to make it easier for him to open. They work great for anything that slides and the cats ignore them. Just make sure your pets ignore them.

Re: OT - Jar Opener
An ice pick or an awl would break the vacuum.
The church key works on thin metal lids--just enough to allow air inside--
careful not to break the glass!
