IPAP vs EPAP

Post by zimm4er » Wed Mar 01, 2017 6:36 pm

I have central apnea. So I a, om a constant rate and pressures. Just checking to make sure that increasing your IPAP affects my hypopnea and EPAP affects Obstructive. Thanks.

That's always been the general rule of thumb that I have read.

They both (EPAP and IPAP) will have some effect on both hyponeas and obstructive apneas but when evaluating pressures to address one or the other...EPAP for the obstructive stuff and IPAP for the hyponea stuff.

Sometimes you even want to use more EPAP even when wanting to kill hyponeas because if you get too much distance (pressure support) between EPAP and IPAP you can cause centrals. So sometimes you do a little more EPAP when doing more IPAP for hyponeas because you don't want too large of a pressure support.

It's not really a question of either or but more of a finely tuned combination of both.
