Anyone using more than one mask regularly?

Post by DavidY » Thu Mar 15, 2018 3:53 pm

Currently, my go to mask is a nasal one, Eson2 by Fisher and Paykel. While it works for me most nights, I still feel a bit claustrophobic (sometimes)..due to headgear over the nose and forehead.

The Wisp was fine except it leaked more often and it caused red marks/scars on the bridge of my nose. I can live with the strap marks on the cheeks from the fabric frame. I heard one con about this mask was that it wasn't very durable. I think that I can use tape or a bandaid to prevent the red marks on my nose. Should I use it as a second mask when I feel claustrophobic (vs. the Eson2)?

I will be trying out the DreamWear with cushion this weekend. My first experience with it earlier this week didn't go well...lasted about an hour or so before I ripped it off (decent on my back...frame seemed to slip off when on my side) and tried the Eson2. Gave up on both and tried sleeping the rest of the night without a CPAP. Felt more lousy than usual. Six weeks into CPAP....more restful than the first week, but still not great. Sleeping longer at 7-8 hours vs around 6 pre-CPAP.

The P10 was decent too, but it caused two sores under the pillows. I liked both the Wisp and especially the P10 since both were less claustrophobic to me due to its minimal headgear.

I vary between an Eson 2, an F20 FFM and a P10 pillow. The Eson give decent results. but it makes my sinuses swell and restricts my breathing. The FFM needs way higher pressures to work, and gives inconsistent results, but great for allergy season. The P10 gives me the best AHI, but It tends to leak and I tend to mouth breath. I do use a chinstrap and/or a C-Collar, still get some mouth breathing and leak around the nostrils.

I alternate between the P10 and Nuance gel pillows. A touch of lanolin under my nostrils makes the pillows more comfortable and prevents sores.

I have 3 FF masks and they all do a good job, but I use my trusty Quattro 99% of the time. I don't see any reason to switch off.

I was alternating between the P10 and a F&P Brevida mask. The P10 at first gave me sores, particularly on one nostril, so I would swap over to the Brevida.
I used a papaw lotion on my tender nose during the day. After about a week of this I found the P10 stopped irritating, and I now use this for the full night every night.

Maybe you just need to give your nose a bit of time (and daytime recovery support) to get used to the best fitting mask?

I normally use the F20 full face mask, but occasionally swap off to the Amara View. I used the Amara View for several months before I switched to the F20.

For several months, I alternated between two masks that were less than perfect,
just to allow healing necessary due to the ill-fitting masks.

I did try different masks regularly for the first 4-6 months... two or three masks, sadly, I used for just a few hours or a day or two and that was it.. others I might have worn for weeks off and on. Over time you will figure out what you like the best (or dislike the least :D ) and stick with it. So if you are trying different masks, go for it.. Just keep playing around and you should get dialed in.

I will know over the new few days if I need to order (on my dime) another mask....leaning towards the Swift FX Nano if the DreamWear doesn't work out. That will probably be it for my mask testing. At over $100 a pop, it's getting expensive. Probably can use the Wisp occasionally. Might try the P10 again...maybe the fit wasn't right...it was fitted by my sleep tech...the cushions went into the nostrils more than what has been talked about at this forum...causing sore nostrils in the AM.

Sounds like wrong size nasal pillows (if they are too small they will try to crawl up inside the nose) or the tension was too snug..or combination of both wrong size and too tight.
Common mistake that nasal pillow users make.

Take one of the P10 pillows all by itself and place it up against the nostrils. Only the tiny tips of that inner core goes up inside the nostril and that inner cone should never touch the inside of the nostril anywhere. If it does the pillow is either too far up the nose or the straps are pulling the pillow into the nose.
Place that pillow against your nostrils gently with very minimal pressure holding the pillow against the nostril opening.
That's all the pressure that is needed to keep the nasal pillows sealed when properly sized.

If it caused sores...something was wrong with the fit or the size. This mask won't make sores inside the nose when properly fitted because nothing should be touching the inside of the nose.

I had a sore under each pillow in the moustache area (I'm clean shaven) after the first two nights with the P10 nasal pillows. I didn't have any other pillow sizes to try out. The P10 is on the backburner for now...since I would have pay for a fitpack now since my trial over and done.

I usually only have 2 masks in rotation. One nasal pillow mask (Used to be the Swift LT, recently moved to the Nuance Pro) and one full face mask that I use only when sick so I can breath through my mouth when my nose is completely plugged. I was using the Quattro for several years but mine has recently gone to mask heaven after an unfortunate accident. Trying to decide if I want another Quattro or if I want to try something new....mostly because the Nuance gel pillows are so freaking good and I figure that gel more memory foam on a ffm might be heavenly as well.

When I get leaking around the nostrils, replacing the nasal cushion usually resolves the issue. I think it is supposed to be replaced every 2 weeks.

when I first started CPAP I had a sore nose from the P10 Medium pillow. I tries a couple of other masks but realized I needed to go back to the P10. After I returned to the P10, I has no more nasal soreness.

Perhaps some nasal soreness for the fist week or 2 is to be expected. With the P10. I am using the same size pillow as originally with no issue.

I never could get two masks on my face at the same time. Also could not figure a good way to connect the hose to two masks at the same time.

I do have a collection of more than a dozen masks but have only used three of them in the past couple years.
