I'm about 45 mins away from seeing 90%+ 'totality' (too lazy to drive an hour for full) and it seems like forever!

4.8 earthquake last week, eclipse 4/8, 4.8 cicada hatchings this summer. The world will end after the last cicada seeks shelter this fall.

Speaking of cicadas, searched for the old thread with cicada limericks from maybe 2004 but couldn't find them. Anyhow, If this double brood cicada extravaganza is anything at all
like 2004, our family will pay a few bills from selling t-shirts. Being a country girl in my youth, the cicadas don't freak me out much. Don't like them but not afraid. I doubt I would hear much of their noise this time around because it sounds so much like the tinnitus I've developed since last emergence. Since I'm now in southern California I won't have to prove my bravery. lol

Funny, the map shows no cicada orgy in Nebraska;
but for years, our hot summers have the interminable screeching from the treetops.
WTF are those ugly creatures anyway?
Are they tourists? Lost? Or hitchhikers from hell?

The map only shows Brood XII and Brood XIX. There are 13 other broods.

Every emergence is exciting – but this one is special because two adjacent broods of cicadas will be coming out at the same time. Across the eastern U.S. there are 15 broods, which are geographical groups of cicadas that each consist of up to four different species, and emerge on a very predictable schedule. It’s not unusual for different broods to come out at the same time, but it’s not all that common for adjacent broods to emerge together.

This year we’ll see 17-year Brood XIII to the north and 13-year Brood XIX to the south. They haven’t come up at the same time for 221 years – since 1803.

Not so pleasant in 90 degree nights with no AC.
those little effers screech all night long.
We have AC now, but my tinnitus duplicates the sound 24/7--

I don't know about the cicadas in Nebraska but I've been on this earth for more than 60 years and in all that time I have never heard cicadas at night.

"In the US, there are no cicadas that typically sing at night (though many do have periods of intense activity at dusk). When Magicicada populations are very dense, some individuals may utter short bursts of sound during unusually hot nights or near bright lights, but this behavior is not typical."

My only explanation for their singing all night was the light pollution from our street lights.
And the unbearable heat!
The poor creatures likely had no idea what time it really was.
Either that, or their hormones were very excessive.
