Pulse oximetry: first overnight reading

Post by zoolander » Thu Mar 20, 2008 6:50 pm

With my CPAP machine I bought a pulse oximeter. I bought a Masimo Rad-5 and am using Profox oximetry software. I've been waiting for a special cable to connect to my computer and finally arrived this week. Anyhow, I gave the pulse oximeter a trial run. Unfortunately I only used my CPAP for half the night because I took my mask off again. I'm such a pussy!

Anyhow....I'm really wasn't really overly concerned about using this read for it's data. I just wanted to see how the data came out.

Here's a summery snapshot (I'm using the Adt Adult adhesive sensor because you can keep it on for greater than 4 hours whereas the reusable sensors you have to readjust them every 4 hours)

What are people's thoughts on the pulse. I've never measured my pulse overnight apart from using a very uncomfortable Polar strap and watch then reading the average when I woke. Are those pulse peaks normal or do I need to investigate??

I am a little concerned about a desaturation point that occured at roughly 3.30am. It appeared to be just above the 80% mark. I know I didn't have my mask on at this stage because I removed my mask at around the 2am mark (I think??). What are people's thoughts on the oximetry??

P.S I'm not overly concerned about the desaturation that occurs at just after 3.45am (<70%) because that occured at the same time as a low signal IQ point. Perhaps an artifact.

I plan to do a CPAP night and oximetry night and publish the data here soon

Thinking that 40 bpm pulse rate is VERY low, probably/possibly a false reading (?). If I saw that consistently on other nights, I'd let my doc know about it. Re the 80 O2 saturation, that's probably due to an apnea event while you were not wearing your mask. Good that you got the pulse ox meter!

Did you have vivid dreams? I have read that pulse can spike during REM.

re the 40bpm pulse...to be honest the mean pulse of 52bpm is a little high for me. I'm a lean active 36 year old. I've been active for most of my life. My resting heart rate is usually in the range of 40-50bpm and my resting blood pressure 95-100/60.

I hardly think that the 40bpm is an artifact considering that I am also using a Masimo SET pulse oximeter. They are of a very high stardard and have been clinically shown to be one of the most accurate.

My many concern about the pulse reading is the "noise"
