Have any of you undergone hyoid surgery, in which the movable bone underneath the chin is moved forward, pulling the tongue muscle along with it?
While researching surgical procedures for my OSA, my Doctor uncovered a cyst that is wrapped around one of my wisdom teeth (that never grew in) in an area that is close to my chin. Since removing the tooth (and the cyst), is quite involved, I was told that the hyoid procedure may be considered.
I do not know much about this procedure, and appreciate if any of you can share your experiences and/or thoughts?
Thanks,
-Justin
Hyoid Surgery Questions
I cannot answer your question about the hyoid surgery but I can tell you as I am sure your doc has that the cyst has to come out. My son had this happen and the cyst almost ate thru his jawbone before we found out about it. Yeah, it was painful but he was taking vicodin for a broken shoulder (really, really long story) so the pain of the jaw thing was masked by the meds.
Don't mean to scare you, I for one, just had never heard of this happening before so I usually worn people when I hear of it.

The tongue is attached to your mandible or back side of your chin (not at the back of the throat, do you mean a Genioglossus advancement?

The above link shows you what is done on the GA and shows how it moves the tongue forward.
Here is the Hyoid Suspension surgery:

Haven't seen where having this procedure help anyone with OSA.

Re: Hyoid Surgery Questions
I'm waking up an old thread to ask if you know of anybody having this surgery, which looks very promising to me. The picture in Snoredogs post shows how suspension of the hyoid bone would pull the epiglottis and tongue with it and open the airway.
