Ultra Mirage Mask Noisy?

Post by andy88488 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 7:48 am

Hi all,

I'm fairly newly-remarried, and by the way, it is going very well!

My wife is a light sleeper, and she is finding my mask (Resmed Ultra Mirage) fairly noisy. I don't think it's a leak, I think it's just the normal sound of the mask.

I need a full-face mask, but I am wondering if maybe there is something that can be done to make the Ultra Mirage quieter, or if a different mask (I'm thinking maybe the Quattro?) would be something to try. Is the Ultra Mirage relatively quiet or relatively noisy? Does anyone have any recommendations for quiet FF masks?

Thanks for all your help!

With the ultra mirage you have to make sure your little rubber fitting on the air vent is FIRMLY secured. I received a new one about a month ago and it was driving me nuts, tried everything, then one of the members here told me to take the rubber cover off and check to see if the underlying holes were drilled out properly and re-seat the cover FIRMLY. I took it off, used a darning needle to make sure the holes didn't have any debris in them and put the cover back on. I made sure I pushed the cover in securely, running my fingers all the way around (I know it's tiny), put the mask back on and no noise. YIPPPEEEEE Give it a try, might be your problem too.
Good luck

Yeah, I saw your thread on that. I have had some experience with that little thing. This is my second Ultra Mirage. (The first one broke). And when I received it, the little port was really noisy, so I reused the rubber thingy (note impressive technical term!! ) from the first mask. I recently bought a couple of spare rubber thingies (plural of impressive technical term!! ) from Cpap.com, so I'm going to try them tonight. But I do wonder if another mask would be quieter.

Have you tried a Hybrid? It takes a few weeks to `tweak` (my techie word , but is great once you have it down pat. I still use my ultra once a week or so just to give my face indents a bit of a change. It has no forehead piece and comes with 3 sizes of pillows and cushions.
Good luck

Yeah, I tried a Liberty a year or two ago. I used it for a few nights, but didn't find it comfortable. I could see if my wife finds it quieter. I'm not nuts about the fact that the Liberty inflates my nose, which I would imagine looks ugly and absurd.

I called CPAP.com, and they said that they think the Quattro or the Quattro FX might be quieter. I was wondering about that, because the Quattro seems to be the number one Resmed FF mask, and the Ultra Mirage is usually sort of the step-child.

I have an Ultra Mirage and also the Quattro - the Quattro, to me and according to my wife, is quieter.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that info. How is the fit and comfort of the Quattro vs the Ultra Mirage? And which Quattro is it, the old one or the FX?

Thanks,

Andy

First official post... been on CPAP for 10 years.

I have used an Ultra Mirage FF for a number of years and just recently upgraded to a Quattro FX. I also upgraded from my old S6 to an S9. With both upgrades the sound difference was unbelievable. The new setup was so quiet.

I use a Medium in the UMFF so I got a Medium in the FX. A few of days ago I decided to try out a Small in the FX to see if it would work any better and did a temporary trade with my Medium. The Small FX was such a disaster that I had to use my UMFF for the night. My wife thought there was something wrong with my mask because it was to loud compared to the FX.

I can't comment on the Quattro FF, but I would think it would be a significant improvement.

Hey Andy - I have the older Quattro as I couldn't be fitted in an FX . They were out of the Large. Don't know that would have worked but I was surprised how much smaller the med. FX ran compared to my other masks. Because it rides lower on your nose than the Quattro it tended to close off my nose.

To answer your question - The Quattro is narrower on my face, and very comfortable when you allow the cushion to fill, and don't over tighten it. I have experienced only minor leaks (3 - 6 L/min above the natural leak of the mask through its vent) and I'm mostly a side -sleeper). All faces are different of course, but mine is fairly lean and not plump. Hope this helps.

Jim

Hi Andy,
I have tried a few different UMFFs and found them to be far too noisy to sleep. I tried all the fixes posted on here with no help. I could not believe it was supposed to be that noisy so I tried a 2nd one when I got one at a good price at auction. No difference. The Quattro is much less noisy. It is the least noisy of all the FFM I have tried. I found it to be among the least comfortable also, but I got used to it. The Padacheek liners helped a lot. It was most difficult on the nose for the first few weeks. Try not to overtighten. Past a certain point it doesnt decrease leaks and makes it much less comfortable.
Don
