Do-It-Yourself Mask Liners - Can they be made durable?

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone makes their own mask liners and if so, what type of fabric do you use?

Is it possible to make them up using a fabric that is a little more durable than what Remzzz's and Quietus use for their liners?

I would imagine that this would be possible using lycra fabric (think material used for ladies slips and similar undergarments) and adding a bit of a seam allowance on the outside edge to allow to turn under to finish the edge and then zig zag around the middle hole for stability. Lycra fabric is thin and supple enough to work with and is more servicable than tee shirt fabric.

Does this sound like it's a viable option or am I completely off my rocker?

I use old flannel nightwear (pj pants that ripped last time) or old tshirt material usually that is on its way to the rag bin. I can cut many in a short time and I have washed them and if they don't last, they aren't any big time and effort wasted.

Thank you, Jules... I hadn't thought of using old flannel nightwear/bedding.

I bought a box of Remzzz's this afternoon and photocopied one of them on a dark setting (the photocopier doesn't like to render much detail) and have pasted the photocopy onto a piced of manilla tag and cut that out so that I now have a template to use once the Remzzz's are all used up.

I have been using Remzzs for approx 8 months and each morning I just rinse it out and and pop it over the top of a coat hanger to dry and I reuse it that night. I find they actually last for many weeks.

After making my own for 8 months, I finally ordered a liner from padacheek....It is great, totally washable and the nose hole does not stretch out like the cotton ones. It is made of a microfiber, much like the fabric in a bra but thinner. It is really cheap so why not buy one from Karen and test it out. It comes with a forehead piece all attached, so no loosing the liner in the bed sheets anymore. It looks like her leak strap is made from the same fabric....and its really inexpensive too.

The 100% cotton material, as used in RemZZZ, does not wash and wear very well. It ravels and distorts. A material that is a cotton/polyester blend works much better. I agree that the padacheeks liner is a great material, so comfortable, easy to place and very washable.

It does both of those things, plus absorbing facial oils that can prevent a good seal.

I have been washing what's left of my RemZzzs, and I have a bunch of homemade ones that I made off a pattern I found online that is similar to the RemZzzs. I used an old t-shirt. I'm most comfortable with a breathable fabric, plus I think that cotton will absorb facial oils better than Lycra. I still have a bunch of RemZzzs that I haven't used yet.

To give you an idea of the durability, I started washing the RemZzzs about a month after I started using the commercial ones. That was in April 2014. I'm still using them all, except for one that started fraying too much and left fibers in my mouth. What I do is, place them in a mesh bag for the laundry, lay them flat to dry after taking them out of washing machine. Next day I iron them to help them retain their shape - they'll last longer that way. I have about 40 liners that I use on a rotating basis, putting the newly ironed ones at the bottom of the pile. They are not hemmed; all I did was cut them out. They don't seem to need hemming; in almost a year and a half, I've only had to discard the one that got too frayed.

I didn't realize it was an old thread; it was at the top of the page and I noted that a response had been posted that same day. The DIY liners probably don't last forever, fabric does wear out, and these will fray over time. However, they are costing me a lot less than what I would pay for new ones periodically... whether RemZzzs or Pad-A-Cheek.
