Sleeping with CPAP and a Cat

Post by jsielke » Wed Mar 01, 2017 9:50 am

After a month of using my CPAP, and the past 2 weeks sleeping great, last night awakened gasping at 2AM. My cat had stepped on the switch on my machine and turned it off. Started up again, and all was well until about 4AM. I woke up, and heard the machine running, but was getting very little air. The old cat was sleeping..against the air intake!

I guess I can be thankful I'm not allergic to cats, but we are going to have to set some ground rules..

Normally, I'd say cats snuggling up to and sleeping on things is kind of cute and typical, but when it messes with your sleep, it's not so cute anymore. Sorry to hear that.

I don't know about your cat but I have 3 that like to sleep with me and they won't/don't listen to any rules I make. It's the way it is with cats.
Fortunately mine don't seem to cause too many issues. It's rare they turn off the machine and they don't mess with the hose or anything like that.

Should your cat persist in turning your machine off or on at inappropriate times or blocking the air you might try putting something over the machine that doesn't enclose the machine but keeps the cat from touching it.
Something along the lines of this item.

Now I don't know if this exact one would be just the right size but it will give you and idea what could be used to cover the machine and not block the air.

We (my wife and I) bought a couple of plastic baskets/containers from the Dollar Store. They are perforated and allow air in and out so the machines don't overheat, We snipped a slot for the hose. Working for us.

I am fine with other peoples cats, but don't have any of my own.
If I did there would be some strict rules about MY space vs the cats space.
The cats space would probably never overlap with my PAP machine or my computers.

Good luck teaching the cats your rules.

We have a standing joke about the cats and dogs here.... we own the dogs... but the cats aren't owned...they are the owners and we are here for their pleasure. Every now and then they let us think we are the boss just to make us feel good.
Cat lovers/owners will understand where I am coming from....others won't.

I couldnt agree more....
What a great idea to get a small perforated basket to cover the machine! My cat will turn my machine off if I don't get up when he wants me to, which is usually earlier than I am ready.

There was an article a while back that domestic cats have the same personality traits as big cats and would probably kill you given a chance:

It seems your clever cat has a method in mind

ClayL's idea with the baskets is inspired... well done!

Definitely! I have 6 cats and except for an occasional laying on my hose in bed, I don't have many problems with them. They can't turn off the Trilogy, but if so inclined, they could turn off my husband's machine, but so far, haven't. He's pretty persistent about keeping them off his nightstand, which he keeps pretty full so it's not as inviting for them.

I love the idea of the tub as well! Great thinking!!

We have owned several dogs and cats over the years. One thing I have noticed is dogs try to please you and cats tolerate you.

About a week ago, our 2 year old Siamese went missing.
After reporting, posting, freaking out, whatever, about 40 hours from last contact, I heard faint mewing.
I followed the sound, and discovered her stranded on the underside of the concrete overpass nearby--
over 30' from the ground, unable to get down alone. Some kids had seen her, and called Animal control,
who refused to do a rescue. My son went onto the overpass, climbed over the railing, and handed her up to hubby.
Still baffled how she got there, claws do not go with concrete.

I'm so glad to hear you found her and very happy your son and husband were able to rescue her. Thank goodness!

My cat turned on me a few times.
Thought I'd have to get rid of her, but she settled down.
After I had taken her to the vet, she was crying and crying and crying on the way to the vet.
But after bringing her home, I could tell she trusted me more.
We became closer.
She still hisses once in a while, but she don't mean anything.
