Tinnitus and CPAP
Tinnitus and CPAP
I have tinnitus and sometimes feel my machine makes it worse. Does anyone else have this?
My machine has been invaluable in helping me sleep, I just have acute ringing in my ears all day long

Have you seen an ENT?

IF you take Aleeve cut down or stop.Henry L wrote:I just have acute ringing in my ears all day long
iirc - it could be a side effect from too much Aleeve (Naproxen Sodium).

Agree with the advice to see an ENT.Henry L wrote:I have tinnitus and sometimes feel my machine makes it worse. Does anyone else have this?

Also, what medications are you taking as they could possibly be otoxotic and cause the condition?

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
I have suffered from constant tinnitus for at least the past 15 years. I saw an ENT regularly for about 12 years for tinnitus, occasional vertigo, and gradual hearing loss, and finally went to see the "Dizzy Doc" (Dr. Timothy Hain) in Chicago. I was diagnosed with BPPV, and my hair cells resembled a freshly mowed hay field.Henry L wrote:I have tinnitus and sometimes feel my machine makes it worse. Does anyone else have this?

After this long journey, I'm left with a few personal opinions about tinnitus: it is incurable; it is highly individualized; it does seems to have certain triggers that can briefly make it worse (rock concerts, alcohol, cannabis, and salt = some of life's greatest pleasures); and it can produce needless anxiety (is it getting worse?).
Sorry for all of this. I know that's not what you came here for, but I'm just as frustrated about tinnitus as you are. The good news is that I've been on cpap for a little over a month, and it has made a remarkable difference in both the quality and quantity of my sleep experience. I have not noticed any change in the presence or level of my tinnitus, and I can't think of a single reason why it would impact this horrible condition. I'm not trying to discourage you from seeing an ENT, especially if you have noticed a definite change in the level of your tinnitus. Personally, I've given up on it and try to remain focused on those things that I can improve. Sleep appears to be one of them thanks to cpap.

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
I too have tinnitus and have used a cpap for about 8 years. The ear problems came up before cpap, so no connection there other than I now sleep sooo much better.
I am deaf in my right ear, am most always dizzy ( not a joke guys) and constant noise in that ear. Been to an ear specialist... with no resolution.
Stick with the cpap you will learn that it will help you with better sleep and learn to ignore the tinnitus.
Good luck
Nan

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
I have had tinnitus for 20 years....my OSA was diagnosed 8 + years ago. Aside from the constant buzz, I have no problems with the tinnitus. It helps me to have some background noise...CPAP helps with that at night.

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
Since Tinnitus is annoying but generally not dangerous, I ignore it. I had it long before I ever started this therapy. It doesn't go away so making peace with it is the only thing you can do. If I think about it, I have it during the day. But, I try to stay busy and seldom pay any attention to it. If it's especially loud at night, I actually 'listen' to it... as if it's white noise... and after a few minutes I no longer hear it -- usually I'm asleep.

Thanks everyone.
Yes have seen and ENT and was told its incurable and hence unless I wanted to spend $300 every 4 weeks being told the same I was wasting my money.
I have no medications.
As everyone says its not dangerous just annoying and seems to be worse now on my machine.
Hey ho just getting old!

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
My tinnitus came after decades of gradual loss in my right ear,
following an ear infection some 60 years ago.
I have used a hearing aid on that side since shortly after the tinnitus appeared.
The hearing aid helps distract my attention from the noise created inside my head.
(((The voices are still there, but they are no longer urgent or violent.)))

Hearing aids help.
But ignoring it helps most.
CAPAP might just be a time when u are focusing on it more.

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
Reading this thread has made me more aware of my tinnitus. All jokes aside, once I got off Wellbutrin Xl, which led to the tinnitus several years ago and Doxepin, which worsened it, I have been able to pretty much ignore it. When I was on these drugs, due to the tinnitus being quite loud, it was hard not to.
And not to belabor the point but please be aware that many medications can cause ototoxicity.

So please keep that in mind when a doctor wants to prescribe a med, particularly if you already have a hearing loss or tinnitus. In some cases, there might not be a choice but if there is, definitely explore other options.

I've had tinnitis for over 40 years -- ever since I went to that Ted Nugent concert, right in front of the speaker system. I think it was this song ...

So if you go to a Ted Nugent concert, don't stand in front of the loud speaker system cuz it's really really loud.

Re: Tinnitus and CPAP
We have always carried industrial ear plugs to concerts.
We started when the kids were tadpoles, and sat on a foam sleeping bag pad way up front.
Hubby cut plugs for the four of us and several folks around us who asked for some.

At 17 years old, I was still young and stupid ... or at least a bit more stupid than I am now.
I've not gone to a concert in over 15 years now.
