Tracking sleep stages
Tracking sleep stages
I have been interested in tracking my sleep stages and ran across this comparison of personal devices compared with a professional polysomnogram and the personal devices come out looking terrible.

Re: Tracking sleep stages
It's hard to measure something that requires EEG activity for measurement without EEG leads.
Cold hard fact of life is that sleep evaluation needs a measurement of brain activity....and not something that measure how much a person moves in bed to have any hopes of real accuracy.
How old was that study/comparison? Have you happened upon a comparison of the FitBit Charge 2? The FitBit Flex wasn't good at all but the Charge 2 or the other higher end one that does heart rate along with sleep stages is decent. Now it's NOT perfectly accurate...I have the Charge 2 and I know it's not perfect but it's probably close enough and considering we don't have much to choose from...not a bad gadget. At least it also uses heart rate and not just movement.
Is this something you are just curious about or are you really wanting to get a device that will attempt to measure sleep and sleep stages?

Re: Tracking sleep stages
I think the FitBit with heart rate and sleep stage stuff came out in 2016 maybe..for sure 2017. Prior to that it was strictly movement only and that has never really proven much to me. I can stay perfectly still and be totally awake all night and a device measuring only movement would tell me I slept well.
Here's what you can see with the FitBit Charge 2. It has missed an occasional known awake time but not often. Sometimes it flags an awake time that I don't remember which in itself doesn't mean much other than I might have woke up briefly and gone back to sleep and simply didn't form a memory.
On my "bad" nights with lots of arousals and awakenings that I do remember...it seems to show it fairly accurately. Especially the little faint pink arousal flags. I saw one comparison of FitBit Charge 2 sleep graphs with a real PSG sleep study graph and it was reasonably close. That was why I went ahead and spent the money. I know it has some limitations and isn't perfect but the Zeo which is probably the only device that actually used some sort of EEG leads and was maybe 75% accurate is no longer easily available since they went out of businesss.
I got mine on Black Friday when they were 1/3 off since I am a tight wad. I was actually mainly interested in the heart rate thing because I had been having some rapid pulse issues that I wanted to watch.

Re: Tracking sleep stages
I picked up a ResMed S+ a couple months ago on Amazon for around $30. My assessment, comparing it to my Zeo and SleepyHead charts, is that it is reasonably accurate. Probably as accurate as any such device currently available. It lacks the detail to zoom in on any specific event, but does present times spent in each sleep stage. As a device to monitor overall sleep quality and work on sleep hygiene, I think it would do as well as any. And the price is right. The only problem is that I think ResMed has abandoned this for a repackaged version marketed with Dr Oz. The S+ requires a smartphone. It is simple to use and requires no body contact.

Just part of my general education about sleep and its discontents. Eventually I will try the emulate you, Jay Aitchsee and usmcvet.Pugsy wrote:Is this something you are just curious about or are you really wanting to get a device that will attempt to measure sleep and sleep stages?

Re: Tracking sleep stages
I think that unless you had a clear demarcation in your original study, you can never be sure what sleep stage you are in unless someone else is observing your rapid eye movements. It's typically pretty obvious for me as I only have apnea events during REM and near REM according to both lab studies, but looking at most of the charts, I can't really see that sort of pattern. Movement isn't really helpful since many people have restleg leg syndrome and others don't move a muscle all night.
