AB filter setting

Post by Cardsfan » Wed Jan 24, 2018 6:11 am

On Resmed Airsense 10 auto, in the clinical settings, there is an option for AB FILTER. It can either be ON or OFF. What does this mean? Does it mean that you are using a antibacterial filter instead of basic filter in the slot on the side? Or does it mean you are using one of those little plastic tubes that attach to the long hose at the machine and have a filter in them, the one that sort of looks like a fish bobber?

That menu choice is for the special
little plastic tubes that attach to the long hose at the machine and have a filter in them, the one that sort of looks like a fish bobber
like this one

There are no special AB filters that would fit in the place on the machine where we put the usual white filters. Those are going to be the usual standard filter or the white fine filters or the white fine hypoallergenic filters and their is no machine choice for that type of filter being used or even not used.

I inadvertently turned the AB setting on and the ASV machine filled me up like blowfish. The on setting seemed to cause the machine to anticipate additional resistance from the inline AB filter....that wasn't there in my case.

That's exactly what it does. Along with the hose type (and length) settings, as well as the mask type setting and the whether you have a humidifier setting (which is done automatically).

All of those things affect the flow resistance in the circuit, the more resistance, the higher the pressure needs to be at the machine to get the desired pressure at the mask.

I've measured the pressure difference between the back of the machine and the mask with a differential manometer, and I've seen as much as 10cm more pressure at the machine than measured in the mask, when taking really deep breaths.

Good to know, I had the AB setting on for a night or two and the pressure was making me hyperventilate with pretty high respiratory rates...off the AB setting goes.

The only time you should turn the ab setting on, is if you have an ab filter installed!

Haha yeah, new machine (to me anyway) and I turned the setting on thinking it was the simple white filter in the back of the machine...not so much

I remember my first reaction---"AB? As in abs/six pack?"
Hmm, maybe clarify the bullfrog's cloudy home brew.

Reviving an old thread after finding this thread to answer a question about the AB filter setting...

Why would anyone need an AB filter in their home? I'm assuming this is when using the AS10 in a healthcare setting, but it's not a closed vent circuit so I don't see the benefit. There are mask leaks.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the AB filter is being used for.

There good for allergy sufferers, especially in pollen season.

Currently they are being advised for Philips users to prevent foam particles.

I guess I'm thinking of more of the reserve use (where we used them to prevent COVID patients from spewing virus all over the room while on a ventilator). The more I think about it, the more I realize those were HEPA filters. I need sleep. LOL
