Chin strap for person with receding chin

I'm currently using a full face mask, but when I relax approaching sleep my chin still drops below the mask. I ordered one chin strap, but it is only partially effective. It is still a little too stretchy and allows my chin to drop a little, though certainly not as much as going without. But because of my receding chin, it wants to slide forward and partially cover my mouth.

Has anyone been able to find a chin strap that worked quite well for a person with a receding chin?

Someone will no doubt want to suggest a cervical collar instead. And yes, I'm trying that, as well. But I want to be able to have both options available when I get a new mask. I cannot tolerate a pressure setting higher than 14 with my current mask due to the unacceptable noise of pressure leaks, even with the cervical collar. My doctor tells me I need a maximum pressure setting of 18 and my AHI numbers to date indicate she may well be right, as my numbers have ranged from 5.5 to 37.8 in the past 22 days since starting CPAP.

Have you considered trying a soft cervical collar? My wife and I both use a firm foam cervical collar we purchased at Walmart. The price is less than ten dollars. Her is the link to the cervical collar we use:

goofproof - I've been reading on these posts about that sleepyhead software and thought I'd look into it. I'm not at all technically inclined, so would need my domestic partner to download and help get things set up for me. Does it work with my machine? How do I get the needed information from my machine to the software?

At the moment I'm still kind of overwhelmed with the troubles caused by another as-yet undiagnosed medical problem that's had a major effect on my life for the past eight months, so I'm not sure if I can yet handle the mental stress of learning about using and interpreting sleepyhead, too, at this point. If it works with my machine, it sure sounds good, though.

It works with your machine, it uses a SD card to transfer the data, so your computer needs a SD card reader, or a USB to SD card reader cable. Personally I use another program as I have a different brand of older machine. Many here can offer advice. Jim

Forum members will help with the interpretation - you shouldn't do it on your own.

If you have a laptop or desktop made in the last five years, it probably has a slot for reading SD cards.

I have a neural chin and have tried a couple different chinstraps, neither work because the chinstrap exerts a back and up the pressure, so as I relax it pulls my mouth open due to the pulling back. C-Collar has been far better for me. Even with an FFM, the pressure below my mouth tends to pull my mouth open a bit when I sleep, so a C-collar even improves my results with an FFM.

Yes, these days I have to back sleep a good portion of the time. My other ailment causes hip pain if I'm on my side for very long. Last night I'll bet it was less than five minutes on my side before I had to return to a back position again. Yet I have to keep going back and forth from back to side because any given position causes pain and difficulty moving if I stay in that position for an extended period. It means a lot of awakenings that aren't SA related.

I have micrognathia--a small and receding chin coupled with a short and very wide "webbed" neck due to a genetic disorder. Chin straps and cervical collars are not helpful or comfortable for me.

When I am having issues with jaw dropping, taping helps--as long as the lips are sealed . . . Thankfully it seems to be intermittent for me.

The reviews on this sounded good, so I was initially thinking I might give it a try. But after checking the sizing information and measuring my head, it appears the standard size would be too large for me. Guess I'll have to look at sizing carefully when I check out other designs.

If you think sizing might be a problem, taping might be a less expensive choice. About $7 a roll, and as long as you double over one of the ends, you'll have no problem removing it in a jiffy.

I am usually allergic to adhesive, but have no problem with it.

Something that might help is a body adhesive. It makes fabric cling to skin. I have used this to stabilize my chinstrap and mask with real success.

The one I used is "Jobst" roll-on body adhesive. Got this at a med supply store . Also available online. (Keep the roller-ball wiped clean with water - it dries sticky)
