Systane Nighttime Eye Gel - No More? Alternative?

Post by AMC4x4 » Sat Jan 26, 2019 12:04 am

A couple years ago on this forum, I mentioned that I was getting air blowing out my tear ducts with my new CPAP and someone recommended Systane Nighttime Eye Gel, which is a thick gel. Never had a problem after that. Thought perhaps it was a seasonal thing, but when I tried a night without it, out came the air again.

So I went into a little bit of a panic when I went to re-order and it's not online anywhere and all the stores are sold out. Anyone know if it's no longer being made?

Does anyone have an alternative? Does anyone use the regular eye gel drops? Is there any alternative that people use? I don't want to use an ointment.

Thanks.

I found a generic alternative at WalMart--at a fraction of the price.
Systane is shockingly overpriced.
I actually prefer artificial tears--not as gummy--and even less spendy.

I just saw the gel at Walmart. I bought the "Systane Balance" drops. Less messy for me.

yup, here's the link-

https://www.amazon.com/Systane-Lubrican ... XQ1XO?th=1

don't know if it matters to the op, but it's only available from third party sellers.

Yeah, but if you look at those third-party sellers, they want $40 for a tube when it normally retails at like $12-15 a tube. Something's up.

I like the gumminess of the nighttime gel and am wary of anything thinner, that it won't plug my tear ducts enough overnight.

Guess I will try the regular Systane gel drops as I'm not giving in to the price gouging from third-party Amazon sellers. :(

During last year's biennial eye exam, I asked the doc about switching to petroleum jelly. He said most people consider it messy, but otherwise, he had no objections. I started using PJ. Works great, and I haven't seen anything messy about it. It does take water and soap to wash out in the morning, but I wash my face and eyes anyway.

YMMV.

Thanks, but I think before going that route, I'd try the Systane eye ointment first - something that's actually meant to go in the eyes rather than put petroleum by-products in them! You've really been OK doing this?

I have been using the regular Systane gel drops for the last few nights. So far so good!

Petroleum jelly is not just a byproduct of petroleum. It's an important product of petroleum with widespread uses and valued for its properties.

Would you put these chemikills in your eyes ------>
Polyethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Boric acid, calcium chloride, hydroxypropyl guar, magnesium chloride, polyquaternium-1, potassium chloride, purified water, sodium chloride, zinc chloride, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.
I mean, really, salt, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide - in your eyes??? Check out the safety data sheets for those.

(Those are the ingredients in Systane Gel.)

BTW, the following dry-eye products are primarily petroleum jelly
Refresh PM (57% petroleum jelly)
Refresh LacriLube (57% petroleum jelly)
Systane Nighttime ointment (94% petroleum jelly)
Genteal ointment (93% petroleum jelly)
Soothe Night Time Ointment (Bausch & Lomb) (80% petroleum jelly)
Retaine PM ointment (Ocusoft) (80% petroleum jelly)

Probably best to have your ducks in a row before going up against Granny.

Think you might need to double check your pricing. $47.00 for a pack of FOUR. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/slredirect/ ... ame=sp_atf

Just heard a segment on National Public Radio about the shortage on the eye gels. Manufacturers not saying why. Be careful that the stuff an Amazon is legitimate.
