How often do you change your pillows?

Post by Midwest_non_sleeper » Fri Aug 09, 2019 8:28 am

For my fellow nasal pillow users, how often do you get new ones? Do you go through your DME or just buy them yourself?

I change mine out every few months, or when I notice that they're leaking considerably. I refuse to even answer the phone when my DME calls, so I just buy them myself. I typically save money. I use Dreamwear nasal pillows and can source them on Amazon for a decent price. I also keep them clean. I usually manually clean them with warm water and Dawn dish soap once a week, but if it's been a busy week, I'm ok with waiting another week.

Is there any reason to buy new pillows every month, like some advise? I find that mine still work great several months after I begin using them.

In the year or so I was using my P10, a pair would last me 4-6 months.

Since switching to the p30i, I'm hoping a pair lasts at least as long and would love to hear what other p30i users are getting.

Over the past 10 years I have used a variety of nasal pillow masks...I have routinely got at least 6 to 8 months out of one unit.
Usually they get retired from looking a bit yucky more than anything else.
Always just bought spares from wherever I got the best price which usually either equaled or less than my copay if using my insurance. Always ended up with more spares than I would ever need.

i don't remember changing out pillows on my P10, but i confess i'm a bit hazy on that. i KNOW that i've used the same pillows for close to two years.

lansinoh (lanolin) on them each night. baby wipe each morning. cleaning with dawn liquid detergent when i think of it, no schedule.

and i just reminded myself to wash them! :)
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Just wondering the role of the lanolin.

Blisters? Blister prevention? Better stick to prevent leaks?

I used lanolin when I was new to Nasal Pillows, and had blistered up. But none since healing up.

For me, it was to soothe the very painfully irritated skin of my nostrils when I started the p10... Hurt so bad, I could only use it for part of the night.

After a couple weeks, I didn't need it anymore... Now I have 90% of the tube left... It does get used on chapped lips, and if my nose is sore from blowing when I've got a cold... Works great.

habit. comfort. slight stickiness that helps it adhere to my nares.

2 years or so. I wash them daily with Dawn, rinse, spray with 100% white vinegar, let sit a min or so, rinse very, very well. When they get haze/filmy or lose their slight tackiness, I boil the silicone mask parts in [ADDED] DISTILLED water with a teaspoon or two of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) for a few (5-8) minutes. If still hazy, back in the boiling water for another few minutes. If that doesn't clear the haze, I throw away. I keep dups of everything so always have spares to use.

I’ve been using my P10 pillows about 6-7 months and they seem ok. I run them daily under the tap and put them into hot soapy water every week or two. Seem ok so far. Have bought a few replacements at a recent sale as I don’t rave a final prescription yet (long story).

a tip to keep them clean is to use unscented baby wipes every morning. doesn't seem to matter which brand to use.

Sorry I'm late getting back to this, work kind of blew up and...well, yeah.

This is interesting, what does the baking soda and boiling do?

The boiling and backing soda trick. First timers I don't advise doing it unless they were going in the trash already.
Stuff happens sometimes.

Mine last years.
What I notice with mine is as they age, they become less firm, and thus do not create as good of a seal, which of course means leaks. I ultimately have to continue tightening my headgear, which becomes uncomfortable if too tight. I usually get about six months out of mine.

Forgot to say, use distilled water and rinse before letting dry. The baking soda removes the haze and restores the slight tackiness of the silicone parts,
