Mask cushion now making "farting noises"

Post by raisedfist » Mon Jan 20, 2020 12:21 pm

I've been using the new F&P Vitera Full Face mask for about 10 days. For the first week or so it worked very well and I never woke up from the mask itself. Now I seem to be waking up from "farting noises" coming from the mask cushion itself.

I have completely taken apart the mask and put it back on again carefully, including making sure the cushion is securely clicked into the frame, but the noise still happens. The leak rates are pretty good and I don't really feel air leaking from the mask itself. While watching the "treatment screen" it shows no leaks on the full prescribed pressures.

I have not let my beard grow abnormally long or anything. I use an electric trimmer every 2-3 days or so and it's basically a short stubble. I tend to trim around my mouth area every night when I remember. I know that clean shaven is best for the FFM, but I've never had a problem with this "farting noise" with most FFM's and this seemed to happen all of a sudden.

I have not cleaned the mask cushion at all but it doesn't look that gross. I don't really wash my face at night either but I never really have.

Baby wipes every night to get rid of the facial oils (They are really there). I use the Simplus and if I don't wipe it every night, I get the occasional farting.

And that's why, the cushion gets greasy, even if you can't see it, and slips.

Clean the cushion with something that degreases it, good dishwashing soap, (I always used Dawn), or alcohol, cleaning your face wouldn't hurt either.

Alright I will stop being a lazy bugger and wipe down the mask and my face before sleeping, and see if these farts will stop

A mask liner will often times stop the mask farts. If you are interested in trying one, you can find a pattern at the following site:
http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/diy-cotton-mask-liner.pdf

I used this pattern when I made mask liners. The best thing I have found is an old, well used tee shirt. I have also make them out of knit paint rags I found at Lowes. One member here on the forum said she made hers out of her old underwear. Any soft cloth will work. This pattern will work well for small and medium mask cushions, and can be enlarged for large cushions. The hole in the center can be enlarged as long as you leave plenty of material to go under the cushion seal.

I cleaned the cushion and my face but I’m still waking up to the stupid mask moving a bit/slipping and then making farting noises. I haven’t had this problem in a few years. I wish this mask would work it gives good data results compared to other masks but not sleeping well is killing me.

Have you tried readjusting the straps?

Why did you stop using the Simplus?

For whatever reason my respiratory rates became higher from excessive mouth breathing while sleeping. I wasn't breathing as deeply while sleeping and as a result my average tidal volume was lower. I also keep having issues with the cushion where it's either noisy or starts whistling. It happens with like 1 out of 2 cushions that I get even though they are factory sealed. The cushions themselves don't seem to last that long for me but maybe I just have bad luck.

I can't explain it but my RR and tidal volume are much better with the Vitera. I think it maybe keeps my jaw more firm or something I honestly have no idea, but the numbers don't lie. I use the bi-level for respiratory reasons so it makes a difference for me in the end.

Yep the seal itself seems rather secure and not too tight that the cushion doesn't inflate properly. I try readjusting when I wake up to the noises but it doesn't seem to help for whatever reason.
