Tummy Sleepers

Post by penelopepanda » Sat Dec 30, 2006 12:04 am

Hello!

I am a tummy sleeper who has been sleeping mostly on my back (and sometimes on my side when I can keep my mask from leaking) since getting my CPAP machine a month ago. Any tips for being able to sleep in a comfortable position AND use my CPAP machine?

Thanks!
PP

Hi there. One thing you could try -- Get a bed pillow that has a firm enough and high enough edge so that you can lie with the side of your head on the pillow and the front of your face & your mask hanging off pillow's edge.

Also, some masks may work better for you for tummy sleeping than others. I found that I'm able to sleep on my stomach quite comfortably with the Breeze nasal pillow interface and a good pillow under my head (i.e, one with a firm, high edge) . I'm guessing the Comfortlite 2 would be a good choice too.

Hi Penelope,
I'm a stomach sleeper also. I saw in your other thread that you're using a full face mask. For those nights when you don't need one (ie, your allergies aren't bad), I highly suggest Invacare's TwilightNP (it was formerly called the Aeiomed Headrest, and before that it was called the Aura). It's available at the site that runs this message board, cpap.com. There are several tried-and-true tummy sleepers here that swear by it. It's amazing. It's a nasal pillows system that is really, really comfortable, and that vents upward, towards the headboard, so there's little chance of you blocking the exhaust while sleeping on your tummy. It took me over a year to find it and try it - and I never had good treatment or a good CPAP experience until I did. I highly recommend it.

As for getting comfortable when you DO have to use your full face mask, you have what is (in my opinion) one of the best full face masks. I suggest using the PAPillow (available from talkaboutsleep.com) or the shapeable pillow from Target to help keep your mask from leaking when tummy sleeping.

Good luck!

Machine: M-Series Auto
Mask: Headrest
No humidifier
On the hose since 2005.

I use the hybrid and CL2 and can sleep on my tummy with either one. The CL2 is a bit more comfy when i'm on my tummy, nothing gets in the way. The hybrid is good on the tummy but it leaves mask marks on the side I'm sleeping on.

Hi,
After 2 years with cpap, and a regular ole Comfort Classic nose mask, I can sleep in any position I need to. I have the longest hose, and it can be placed any way to accomodate my sleep position.
I use a regular pillow, but not a foam one.

If my dog would not wake me up in the middle of the night, I would sleep straight through.

The Twilight NP Aura by Invacare (or whatever the name is now) is great for side and stomach sleepers. But like most nasal pillows, it does get rainout. So most hoseheads end up buying the Aussie heated hose.

I just recently (two nights ago) bought shapeable pillows from Target. They're actually REALLY nice because you can shape out the divot for your mask and then it feels like you're sleeping on a normal pillow, not on the edge. I'm quite impressed. (I usually sleep on my side).

Hmmmm. Maybe I'll try the Target pillows & give myself a break from "living on the edge".
