Nasty chemical smell & burning nose -need help!
Nasty chemical smell & burning nose -need help!
Last night I was awakened at 1am by a nasty chemical smell and a horrible burning sensation inside my nose, and I have no clue what the cause might be. I was wearing my Bleep mask. The exact same thing happened a month or two ago, but that time I was wearing a Dreamwear mask. And in both cases, when I turned the CPAP off and removed the mask, the air in the bedroom was just fine. Also both times, when I turned the CPAP back on a few hours later, everything worked fine.
Here's my setup:
- my ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset is 5 1/2 years old
- no humidifier
- regular hose, not heated
- I alternate between Dreamwear and Bleep
I'd appreciate any insight on what's wrong and what I can do about it.
Thanks!

Covid is known to mess with your sense of smell.
Get tested--even if you have been vaccinated.

Did you accidentally bump the humidity setting on the machine to something other than zero?Hopeful50 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:22 amLast night I was awakened at 1am by a nasty chemical smell and a horrible burning sensation inside my nose, and I have no clue what the cause might be. Or,
Is your CPAP intake close to your power brick?

I had an experience like that a couple times with my old System One when I forgot to refill the humidifier and had it turned up high and it went dry. You're not using a humidifier so it couldn't be that. Did your machine seem hot?Hopeful50 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:22 amLast night I was awakened at 1am by a nasty chemical smell and a horrible burning sensation inside my nose, and I have no clue what the cause might be. No humidifier attached, so there is no humidity setting; power brick is on the floor well below the machine. I didn't try touching the machine to see if it was hot - I was totally focused on getting the mask off. I did try camouflaging the smell by putting a drop of essential oil on a tissue near the intake. Nothing good happened - just orange mixed with nastiness.

How close is your cpap to the HVAC vent?
Heating/AC ducts can carry vapors from your furnace, etc., and the space around it.
Cleaning products can spill or leak and mice can die in remote passageways.

Re: Nasty chemical smell & burning nose -need help!
We have no HVAC vents in the house. We have wall heaters that never run at night.
It happened again last night. Felt like the inside of my nose was on fire, and the smell was nasty. Turned the CPAP off and everything was fine. Restarted an hour later and slept well the rest of the night.

Take the machine to the dealer and ask them to try it - could be that start-up is flicking something inside that emits the smell.
Re: Nasty chemical smell & burning nose -need help!
October 2022 I awoke with a chemical burning sensation in my sinuses. The burning spread to my throat and my eyes. I had mucus coming out of my nose that was so thick. I just stood over the sink and was completely in shock. I had no idea what was happening. It’s been almost a year and I still have that chemical smell when I inhale. I’ve been to a specialist, and he told me there was no way this could’ve happened with my CPAP machine. But I hope much better after I got home and read his reviews. One star ratings across-the-board. I am waiting for a scan of my sinuses next week. Another doctor (not ENT) said It could be a fungus. The scan will tell me. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s your imagination. These machines can and have been known to get hot and malfunction.

You are talking to someone who has been GONE nearly TWO YEARS.
More proof that this is extremely uncommon.
And you still don't know what caused it?
SMH.
