nose bleeds

Post by russpat » Sat Jan 27, 2007 7:01 pm

I'm just wondering if anyone here has had a problem with nose bleeds. I have been on CPAP therapy for 10 days now and have had three nose bleeds during that time. I thought it might be because I had the humidifier turned down too low, but turning it up any higher increases the rainout. I have ordered an "aussie hose", but it will be awhile for it to come in. Just wondered if this is a common thing.

It may be due to your nasal passages getting dried out. Some might recommend a saline nasal rinse or spray. Also, some AYR saline gel with aloe is good to use. Go to the SEARCH box above and enter keywords bloody AND nose. You will get alot of posts from people who were going through the same thing.

Good luck!

I have nose bleeds. But then again, I've have nose bleeds since I was a child. I have a vaine in my nose fairly close to the skin. CPAP hasn't helped it much. Lately I've been using somthing... Secaris and the same brand also makes Rhinaris. I've tried Rhinaris, an ENT specialist gave me a sample. Didn't work for me. But Secaris does. Costs about 5 something in Canada. Great stuff! According to the pharmasist, they've had a run on the stuff.

I slather a little on in my nose and on the outside of my nose and put the CPAP on. Haven't had a sore nose when I wake up anymore. Still have the clots all day long, but its winter and I've always had that problem in the winter. I use vaseline during the day. Smells and feels disgusting, but keeps my old nose from bleeding.

You can use a hose cover and/or route the hose under the covers with you in bed until your Aussie Hose gets there. Then jack up that humidifier a bit more.

I had nose bleeds as a child too so I think I might have a similar problem with veins being so close to the surface. If I get a cold, I will get nose bleeds. I have never heard of those products, but I have a call in to my Dr. and maybe he can suggest something like that. I have an appointment with my sleep clinic this evening to go in and be fitted with another mask. I have a small nose and was fitted with a pediatric mask initially. The tech now says that maybe the mask is too small and that's why the condensation is building up causing the rain out. I do think I need the extra humidity, but until my aussie hose comes, I won't turn it up. For now, I have the hose double covered from the machine up to under my pillow where I keep all but the part of the hose that has to come out for my mask. I think I will eventually get this fixed. At least I hope so because I want it to work.

I would go down to your drug store and get some SimplySaline. It comes in a small aerosol can with a special applicator to reach up deep in your nares. It contains only a saline solution (no preservatives).

One can lasts me several months. I give a squirt to each nare before bed and it really helps.

Russpat:

I have a small nose too. I wonder if that has any corralation with nosebleeds as kids. Hmmm...

My brother and sister don't have the problem. Yet my grandfather did. That's why we think its hereditary. Something to think about.

I put a little bit Vaseline around the inside of my nostrils before putting my mask on. It helps to keep the membrane moist, thus reducing the bleeding. If you put it on thin enough, you don't even notice that its there.

Nasonex, Flonase etc

I don't know if you are using a spray like Nasonnex but if you are, this might help.

My ENT told me to spray the Nasonex to the outside, away from the septum, as that is where the problem usually exists with nosebleeds. Haven't had one in weeks and I am doing 1 spray in each nostril twice a day.

You might want to be careful with vaseline. Apparently the petroleum in it will eventually effect your mask. That's why I only use it during the day and not at night (I wash my face before putting on my mask, to cleanse the area used by the vaseline).

My doctor many years ago, when I was a child, told my mum to make sure I use vaseline if my nose was dry, works great, like I said earlier, doesn't smell nice and feels awful, but it works...

I am using a saline nasal spray at night now and I haven't had a nose bleed for two days. A trace yesterday, but not full on bleed. I exchanged my mask last night for a petite and wound up only being able to stand it for a little over an hour. To get a good seal, I had to tighten it up and then the bridge of my nose hurt. In that time I had no rain out at all. The tech told me last night that if this mask doesn't work, I can try a pillow type. Guess I might have to give that a try.

I had many, many, many serious nosebleeds DESPITE having the vessels cauterized as a child. These continued into adulthood UNTIL I received a prescription for Flonase. I also started doing saline rinses of my nostrils, and here are a few postings about that subject:

Now, I only have a very slight bit of bleeding only if I forget to use the Flonase for a period of several days' time, and then when I start using it again. This bleeding doesn't even require pinching the nostrils to apply pressure or using a number of tissues.

Here is another posting on the topic:

It turns out that I have bleeding disorders that contributed to the problem. This is a sign of the disorders, and it is best to avoid finding out by having major surgery OR a serious accident. My disorders are very, very mild and only cause problems under serious conditions.

Please note that one blood test may or may not catch a disorder, as there are many factors in clotting that vary. I was tested and declared free of the bleeding disorders twice, but I have them. Also, a bleeding time test is not an accurate indication!

Bleeding Disorder Symptoms Include:

Bleeding LONGER, not always bleeding MORE
Easy bruising
Easy bleeding, or bleeding longer than normal
Nose bleeds
Abnormal bleeding after major surgery, dental work, or serious injuries
Heavy menstrual bleeding (or menstruation for more than 5 days)
Heavy bleeding after childbirth

Risks resulting from Bleeding Disorders Include:

Scarring of the joints or joint disease (this can be serious and similar to rheumatoid arthritis)
Vision loss from bleeding into the eye
Chronic anemia from blood loss
Neurologic or psychiatric problems
Death, which may occur with large amounts of blood loss or bleeding in critical areas, such as the brain.

Sorry this is so long, but I'm hoping that it could save a life. The nosebleed symptom was my only real indication of a problem UNTIL the abdominal surgery. I do not recommend that as a way to diagnose a problem, and a serious accident would not be a good tool for diagnosis, either.

Can you tell that I was a speaker for bleeding disorders?

Take care, and feel free to contact me for any questions on bleeding disorders.
