CPAP causing TMJ / Jaw pain to increase
CPAP causing TMJ / Jaw pain to increase
Hey I use a full CPAP face mask and am in my first full month of use, I have had TMJ issues in the past but noticed it flair up recently. Anyone have tips on how to reduce this? Would a full face mask be worse for this? Should I get a different one?

Full face masks are the worst for TMJ, because they press on your lower face.
Nasal pillows are the least invasive--Bleep the very least.
Cloth masks (Sleepweaver) are also good, as they need to be worn very loosely.

Be careful of advice sent to you by PM. Sometimes, people are trying to hide bad advice from peer review.

Re: CPAP causing TMJ / Jaw pain to increase
I have a severe TMJ disorder caused by a faulty TMJ implant that was recalled by the FDA in 1990. I was told by my dentist and my physical therapist that I could not use a full face mask due to pressure on my jaw. I use a nasal pillow mask. I also use mouth tape to keep my mouth closed and prevent mouth leaks. I have found that my jaw is actually able to relax against the mouth tape, and I clench my jaw less with the tape!
You could try loosening the mask straps to see if you can find a sweet spot between sealing the mask and pressure against your jaw. However, you are probably going to have to try a different mask to find one that puts no pressure against your jaw.
Finding a mask is probably the most difficult part of using a CPAP for many people. Keep trying, and good luck!

And sometimes they just want to share their story privately rather than providing advice.

First I don't understand why y'all are making such a fuss about honesty.
