Spit or Taste Blood in the Morning

Post by bevjen » Mon Aug 19, 2024 10:12 am

I've been using my machine about a year now. The last several months most morning I taste blood, occasionally I will spit it up. The sleep doctor acted like they've never heard of this happening but suggested I turn the tube temp down to 70 and the humidity to 3. I did that but it is still happening. I know this is from using the machine but don't know what to do to make it stop. I've seen some older posts where people had the same issue, but did anyone ever get an answer or does anyone have any suggestions?

Not everything is related to sleep apnea and cpap therapy. Spitting up blood is a potentially important symptom for multiple health problems. Have you reported this to your primary care doctor? If not, you should.

In other words, this may be a symptom of a new health problem that is completely unrelated to your sleep apnea and cpap therapy. See a doctor who is not your sleep doctor about this problem.

Why not? CPAP machines have been blamed for every known and some unknown maladies.

If I went to my doctor and he/she told me that the water temp and or the hose humidity being too high was causing me to bleed, I would be in the doc's face and out the door and looking for a new doctor.

If your doctor actually told you that, wow, that's crazy!

Now, wait a minute! The doctor has professional experience with this!

Your SLEEP doctor is a "specialist".
Specialists are defined as much by what they DON'T do than what they actually do.
Your sleep doc does not effing know!
You need a different specialist!
Ask your PCP for a referral.

I'm not sure what to think. I was hoping for some help but instead all I got was snarkiness.
I know it's the machine causing the blood taste, if I don't use the machine for a few days I don't have it. It IS THE MACHINE, I don't need a specialist to tell me that. What I do need is a specialist that knows what to do about it, or to tell me not to use the machine, get a different one, a different mask or something. So I guess it's off to look for a different doctor.

This site's participants are known for their scepticism of the medical profession including physicians and sleep techs. They will also tell you that DME's are agents of the devil. Some scepticism is healthy. Please be open enough to form your own opinion in seeeking competent medical advice.

not everyone was snarky. pay close attention to robysue1. it can't hurt to visit another non-sleep specialist doctor such as an ear nose and throat person.

good luck!

I have relieved my bloody situation in the nose by beginning to use the humidifier on my AirSense 10. Setting humidity on 2 worked, moving to 1 to conserve water tonight.

In the summer my house is at 30% humidity due to running AC 24/7. 40 to 50 is probably better for breathing.

CPAP dries out the airways which can lead to bleeding in the nasal passages that could lead to tasting blood...maybe.

Do you have allergies, a stuffy nose?
What kind of climate do you live in?

I myself have horrible allergies and live in a dry high mountain climate. When my allergies really flare my horrible nasal congestion causes me to mouth breath and the cpap air rushing through my nasal mask and passages and out my open mouth really dries out my already irritated sinuses. I can relate to coughing up blood in the morning when my cpap further dries out my already angry nasal passages.
For me allergy meds, the right humidity setting, and nasal saline gel help.

We’re all different don’t know if my personal experience helps at all.
Hope you’re able to figure it out!
