Experience with Adaptive Flow Hybrid

Post by mecocosm » Wed May 09, 2007 5:56 am

A month back, I got the new Adaptive Flow Hybrid (manual says Rev C) and I've been using it with my M-Series Auto C-Flex. The 90% average pressure for me hovers around 12 cm.

Visual Appearance:
The exhaust ports look smaller on the Adaptive Flow Hybrid than the original version.

Advantages I can clearly see:
1. The Adaptive Flow version is far quieter (even when I route the hose over my head). I would venture to say that the Adaptive Flow Hybrid is by far the quietest FF mask I have tried.

2. It feels more comfortable to breathe with.

3. My 7 & 30 day AHI numbers are down by ~ 1 point.

Disadvantages I can clearly see:
None

Hope this helps everyone wondering what the difference is between the two versions.

Thanks for the report ... where did you get the Rev C from?

I got the Adaptive Flow Hybrid from United Sleep Medicine. The manual says 05080 Rev C.

What exhaust leak rate does your Rev C manual have at 10 cm, 12 cm and 15 cm?

Thanks for the information.

Are there marks on the shell to identify it as the Adaptive Flow Hybrid?

I have three of the original shells plus an Adaptive Flow Hybrid in route to me. Maybe if I get them mixed up, I just have to compare exhaust port size?

Where do you order just the shells?

Sorry DreamStalker, I did not tell the whole story. I actually have 3 complete mask sets and am adding to my collection. I don't know who would sell you just a shell. rooster

If a person orders a hybrid from cpap.com would they be assured it was the adaptive flow version...or do you have to order it special from someone else?

So are you trying to corner the market?

I thought I was bad with two Breeze interfaces even though I can only wear one at a time.

All the new Hybrids come with the "adaptive flow" feature now. They are both easy to breath with because there is hardly any pressure against you when you breathe out, where as a product with less Co2 release (like the soyola or the quattro) have an enormous amount of pressure that builds up to breathe against. At least thats what a tech told me. He called it "backflow".The trend now is to allow less Co2 to release which makes their masks quieter, but the Hybrid has the most Co2 release and yet is extremely quiet, with no backflow to breath against. The Hybrid ahead of it's time. No doubt about it.

I tried "Adaptive Flow", by putting a toothpick in one of the vents.
This action reduces the 'Passive Exhalation Port Flow" by 1/6 th. So
how much does the "real" Adaptive Flow unit reduce the "Passive
Exhalation Port Flow"?

Oh, I really couldn't tell any difference with the toothpick.maybe I need
two toothpicks. The "old" Hybrid flow chart shows 60L/M at 15 cm H2O,
That calculates to 10L/M per hole. What does the "Adaptive Flow", flow
chart list for 15 cm H2O?

If the Adaptive Flow mask has reduced the exhaust flow to 48L/M at
15 cm H2O, that makes it the same as the UMFF. I don't think
the UMFF is really ahead of its time, do you?

I think the real reason behind the "Adaptive Flow" concept was; The
inability of ResMed machines to cope with the 60L/M at 15 cm H2O
flow...

+ Aussie heated hose.

Not only I , but many others post that breathing out with a Hybrid mask is MUCH easier than full face masks. UMFF was one of the worst I tried. I happen to have a very high pressure.
Greater Co2 release is very ahead of it's time.
Anything that helps us breath against the high pressures is high tech.
Sometimes advances are the simple things everyone else forgot to try. Look at the nasalaire one. It revolutionized the sleep mask industry. I'm sure it influenced the swift and countless other masks and look how simple it is.

Rooster,
I find the Adaptive flow Hybrid easier to exhale compared to other FF masks I've tried (UMFF, HC431). From your earlier post, I gather that you still have not received your Adaptive Flow Hybrid. Please report after you try it.

WHERE'S THE MEAT?

EXACTLY WHAT IS THE PASSIVE EXHALATION FLOW RATE OF THE
ADAPTIVE FLOW HYBRID?

Statements without data means nothing to us engineers...
+ Aussie heated hose.
