Dark Circles Under Eyes Due to Mask

Post by skjansen » Thu May 29, 2008 1:32 pm

I need some feedback from all of you. I have used the Quattro and Ultra Mirage full face masks from Resmed. I also just received a Respironics Comfort Gel Full Face mask yesterday.

All of these masks leave dark circles under my eyes because of the way the mask sits on my face. Do any of you have any thoughts regarding something I can do to eliminate or at least reduce the dark circles? Does pad a cheek make something to help with this?

Let me know your thoughts please.

No solutions, but I'll certainly be watching closely for an answer. I look like I've aged five years since I started CPAP a few weeks ago: Dark circles and puffiness under my eyes. And when I went to the hair bender last week, I swear I could see the indentation of my mask still on my face as I looked in the mirror. Oh, my gosh, it was an awful sight!!

I don't get darkness, but definitely the puffiness under the eyes. Sometimes I really look like hell, but despite appearance, I'm well rested at least.

I can't wear a mask because the pressure bothers my sinuses - I wear nasal pillows. I think the problem stems not from the presence of the mask, but from the increased air pressure, and possibly from leakage into the eyes.

I've found one trick to reduce the puffiness somewhat. In the morning, I get in the shower and turn the water up as hot as I can stand it on my face. Then I stand under the water to get as much as possible on the problem areas. It sometimes takes a couple of minutes, and it's not a cure-all, but it's helped for me.

Clever witticisms sound more forceful in Latin.

Dark circles under the eyes are most often caused by allergies, illness, a lack of sleep, or heredity. Dark rings can be a sign of an iron deficiency anaemia (meaning "without blood"). Anaemia is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to the body tissues. There are several types of anaemia, but iron deficiency is the most common.

Our bodies need iron to manufacture haemoglobin, the red pigment which carries oxygen to the cells. Dark circles alone do not indicate anaemia, you will also suffer from constant tiredness, headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, poor memory, frequent colds and infections, and pale skin.

It's something that generally affects women more than men - partly because of the menstrual cycle. If you've had these dark rings for years, it could be that age rather than diet is the cause. As we get older our skin becomes thinner. To some degree this process is controlled by our genes and family patterns, but it's also influenced by things that damage the skin, such as smoking.

Thanks for all of the responses.

Shilocane...thanks for all of the info. I do in fact have dark circles under my eyes due to allerigies and heredity. The darkness I am referring to, however, is almost like bruising from where my mask sets. The mask just makes my dark circles even darker.

I just ordered a Resmed Mirage Liberty Mask. This is a full mask that uses both nasal pillows and also covers the mouth. It does not touch the eye area at all. I am hopeful this is the answer.

Thanks again!

Ya think?

I had a slight bit of dark circles to start with (i.e. heredity), but they are most definitely darker, much more pronounced since starting CPAP. (Maybe puffiness emphasizes the darkness intermingling with it?) No allergies, not anemic according to my blood tests, so that kind of leaves lack of sleep, an interesting result of a therapy that is supposed to improve one's sleep. I'm not disputing that as the cause, because most days I do feel more tired since starting CPAP than before -- I'm just praying that some day that changes.

eyes and cpap

Post by lifeartist59 » Sun Jun 01, 2008 2:55 pm

Under my eyes looks puffy every day now. I notice the change after looking at some recent photos. I look tired all day, but find that strange since cpap is supposed to help it. I don't feel bad most days though, but never had the sleepiness most of you mention pre-treatment. I just notice the eye changes. Guess it is worth it, right?

You may consider Photo-rejuvenation, or LED Light Therapy. I have two LightStems "The Original Light" and "The Anti-Aging Light". My Demonologist was going to put me into Photo-rejuvenation for some sun spots that I got from being a pool lifeguard as a kid. I did my homework and they work and it did lighten the dark sun spots on my face. These aren't as powerful as the expensive ones in the Demonologist's office but they are the same LED wavelengths and you have to use these for three minutes per area where the Pro's would do your whole face in 30 seconds.

NASA found LED light at three different wavelengths promotes healing. This is where I got my two LightStems.

I am a new cpap user, having just found out about my severe apnea..I am on my third cpap mask, most recently a pillow mask, and I, too, have a problem with dark circles and puffiness under my eyes. I look like I get no sleep at all, when in fact I am pretty well rested. I need to know what kind of mask I should ask for. Any suggestions?

Hey Friends.
I have been struggling with this issue now for months. The Cpap treatment has helped my sleep apnea. BUT,,,, as a lot of you said I look horrible when I look in the mirror. Like I have aged 5 to 8 years. Dark circles and creases under my eyes. I have never had this before until using the mask. And the thing is,, the mask is not leaking at all. I know so and the actual machine show no leakage. I have tried all types of creams and tricks with nothing working. In my opinion,,, if there are no leaks and you are still getting dark circles or lines... it has to be something with the pressure. The pressure is not set right. After a good nights sleep there should be no dark circles and wrinkles. It has to be lack of the right oxygen . I am still working on this with my sleep doctor. The most frustrating thing is that sleep apnea does not seem to be as understood as many others ailments. Its a long long road. And I feel a lot of times I am on my own to figure this out. Everyones journey with this is different. So it really is trail and error. But thank you all for being here. We can learn from each other along the way.
