Any Full Face Masks Better for Nose Bridge?

Post by ericlhyman » Sun Mar 08, 2009 2:17 pm

Are there any full face masks that are relatively less irritating to the nasal bridge? My trial with the Hybrid Mask did not work out because the pillows kept popping out and my AHI numbers increased as a result.

I haven't yet found a mask that doesn't give me a welt on the bridge of my nose. However, I did find that using a nosebridge protector from padacheeks.com helps a lot. I also found out, after talking to thelocal Resmed rep, that I may have been using the wrong sizes all along. After he measured my face, he said I should be wearing an X Small Quattro or a Large Activa. So don't think if you are a small in one mask that you will be a small in another, even from the same company.

I found that the Zzz mask made by Probasics is very easy on the nose. The only trouble is my Ins. will replace the seal once a month and with the Zzz there is no seal it is all kind of one piece. You might check it out.

I couldn't get the Hybrid nasal pillows to seal for me. Spent hours with the thing, tried all 3 sizes, used Lansinoh Lanolin, just couldn't get it to work. I just got in the Mirage Liberty and so far I'm very impressed. It is like the Hybrid but it uses the same type pillows that I love on my Swift LT (double walled) and they seal right up for me.

Happy Birthday Bev!

I was having bridge problems with my UMFF, but I think that was because I had to wear it so tight to keep it from leaking. Now with the Quattro I'm able to wear it looser and don't have any significant leakage and no nose irritation. But that's just me.

Try Moleskin across the bridge of the now. What is your pressure? I have gotten better at adjusting the mask over time. Sometimes one must adjust the bottom straps to less pressure to let the top ones use less pressure. That is, When the bottom straps are really tight, it raises the top of the mask off the face. And vice versa. When the top straps are really tight, it lifts up the bottom of the mask. One can get into a cycle of tightening one set and then other. sometimes one must start all over and loosen both top and bottom, then slowly tighten them up. I know, It is harder to do in practice, than it sounds. One can also benefit from slightly pulling the mask down a bit. Sometimes after the straps are on, I need to pick the mask up off my face and sit it back down again. This lets the internal route of the pressure that inflates the seal from underneath to get air pressure into it. That is the mask I use is designed to let the air pressure from the machine help to create the seal with a trough area near just under the area next to my skin.

You may want to consider the Respironics ComfortFull 2. It kind of has a deeper 'notch' for the bridge of the nose and thick cushions. I find it very comfortable...I barely know I'm wearing it when I wake in the morning.

I also have a Quattro and UMFF. Both are great masks, but I have to manage the welt problem with a bandage applied
during use.

I had the Mirage Quatro full face and whatever size I tried gave me the sore nose, I then went onto the liberty and got good results, only problem I had to tape up nose to stop leaks. I then received a nose and head pad from Bev at padacheek.com as the quatro felt right for me apart from the nose sore and hey presto no more sores, still leaves a small mark on nose but this get better every day, I would recommend anyone to try the pad it has worked wonders for me.

When I first started wearing the Quattro it was causing me some redness issues over the bridge of my nose and there were also some leak issues.

I found that tightening up the lower straps and wearing the mask higher on my face solved both issues... no more red nose bridge and leaks reduced to acceptable levels.

OT ... interesting choice of avatar for a CPAP group, N6CRV. BTW I have a gun that looks just like that, though I think mine is a smaller caliber (.22).

Are you SURE your Hybrid can't be adjusted more to suit your needs, ericlhyman? I'm not being critical... it's just that I have the Hybrid as a backup for nasal congestion times and found it took more work to get it adjusted than my regular mask, but once I got everything adjusted right, the seal holds well. Rooster, our resident Hybrid expert, has excellent adjustment suggestions here: viewtopic.php?t=14422&highlight=. I know I completely misunderstood how the pillows were supposed to be placed until I read his post; maybe that's the case for you, too. At any rate, I'm not saying you shouldn't look into other masks; just that as long as you have the Hybrid, Rooster's suggestions might make using it more successful at least until you get another one. Or you might find that it is THE mask for you with a few simple tweaks.

Good luck!!
