Mouth taping issues.

Post by krazykchan » Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:50 am

I did a search but didn't really find my exact problem.

I have resorted to taping my mouth shut at night. That's all fine and dandy. However, I am wondering how you all are able to keep the tape on all night? In the middle of the night, I wake up to me sucking in air through my mouth and my tape has come undone. It seems that my tape comes off due to moisture. I keep the AC on all night so I don't think I'm sweating too much.

What to do? What to do?

Curl your lips in a bit before putting the tape on, sometimes that helps. Do you run a heated humidifier?

I also have had this issue from time to time. I usually do "pucker up" as I am applying the tape. I have also backed off the humidity level a bit.
I have thought of having a replacement tape ready and handy but have not yet resorted to that.

I do curl my lips in already and yes, I run a heated humidifier. I couldn't use my nasal pillows without it!

Yeah, I've noticed it's much more likely to come undone during the night from moisture if I turn on the humidifier. I usually just fill it with water but don't turn on the heat...but even that doesn't always work. I've woke up with very dry nose and throat and had to turn it on at least 1. I'm not sure what the answer is.

I tried the mouth taping, but I found a better solution. Got myself a Super Deluxe Chin Strap from Amazon.Com. This is an elastic chin strap that wraps around your head. You will see the picture when you go to the website. The first few nights I used part of the chin strap to cover my lips and it worked great. Playing around with it I found if you put it on and have the sides pass just on the sides of your mouth and the bottom just under your bottom lip it works great, feels better, and yes you can talk. Solved all my problems without feeling like I've been abducted and had my mouth taped shut.

I have found this to be a problem now and then also. What helps me is to thoroughly wash my face with soap and water before applying the tape. This assures there is no facial oils stopping the tape from sticking good.

Nexcare "Absolute Waterproof" tape. You can get it almost anywhere, but it looks like this:

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

You could also use something like this: http://www.findtape.com/shop/product.as ... 4&height=0

Personally, though, I'd rather go with a more overall solution to keep the airway open...
