Do you have problems with your Swift LT ?

Post by Physician » Thu Aug 26, 2010 6:20 pm

(Posted this in another thread, but it had no replies, so it's reposted here)

I tried the Swift LT a few nights ago and did NOT like it.

1. Those bimalar (cheek) projections from the straps press excessively and needlessly on my cheeks, and

2. The straps pull upward on my cheek skin producing wrinkles under both of my eyes

This is why I liked the Swift II. That bar reduces or eliminated both of these issues.

1. I guess those cheek projections are for stabilizing the mask, but they seem superflous to me and I've thought about cutting them off. Some day I will experiment.

2. On the lab rat page there is a fix that involves an elastic loop hung from one cheek projection, around the back of your head, and onto the other projection. That gives the LT great stability and keeps it pulled down so it doesn't pull up on your cheek causing eye wrinkles. I like the extra stability it gave the mask. But it made me feel like a trussed up pig and it's ugly as sin!

You might also try the velcro trick from UFO 13. Sew velcro hook tape (the stiff side) to the inside of the back strap to keep the strap from slipping when you move your head against the bed pillow. It works very well.

I prefer the FX for the reasons you state above. No stupid cheeck projections, and it tends to pull down, not up because of the weight of the slinky hose (except when you suspend it overhead with a hose management system as I do). The LT is OK, the FX is great.

I tried the optilife which leaked badly and bothered my nose and ended up with the Swift LT which I like much better, but I don't like how the straps are low over the ears (like a bluetooth for the cell phone). My wife hates the vent which provides air conditioning for her most of the night. Who thought of that I guess when the 3 months is up I will try something else, but until then it is a mask I can live with.

If you decide to try something else, a vent that your wife will appreciate ('cause she'll never feel even a wisp of air from it) is on Aeiomed's "Headrest" mask...my favorite for many years now:

I think its perfect for me but that's not to say its perfect for everyone. I have a stock pile of 4 new masks just in case Resmed stop making them or start making more highly disposable parts for them.

i do not think i could try the Swift II, I'm not sure I'd like to try any mask which has the hose around the side of the head. My hose management is over my head and up over my bed headboard.

I have been working with the Swift FX recently, have you tried that? It certainly does not grip on the lower front cheeks like the LT does. By the way you can bend those LT flaps all the way back and make the grip much looser, that's the first thing I do when i open a new one. And my last fitting adjustment is always a gentle tug on those front side straps in a downward direction, so it feels like its floating on my face. Also some people use the pad a cheek products aid the kind of discomfort you describing.

In order to use the Swift FX i take an old hose clip from an LT and put it on the headband of an LX, otherwise the weight of the tube pulls the pillows out of my nose when i move.

I love my LT. I just leave my hose loose and under the covers with me. The cheek pads just kind of float on my face. It's not perfect though, the back strap tends to ride up on my head when I sleep. I used to have to adjust it in the middle of the night sometimes, but figured out that if I leave a chunk of my hair over the strap, it stays on much better. But then I wake up with kind of a weird bend of that section of my hair in the morning. I'll have to try the velcro trick.

Want to try the FX since so many people like it, but a little afraid of change.

You can try UF0 13's suggestion of attaching a piece of velcro (hook side) to the inside of the mask's back strap. The velcro grips the hair and keeps the strap in place. It works, and it is not as uncomfortable as it sounds.
