"Sleep number" Bed?

Thanks for all the feedback. It looks like this is a decision which I need to carefully consider. I do like the adjustable firmness feature. Wife taught aerobics for many years, 20 classes/week, and she's now paying the price for that. 3 knee operations, achilles tendon wants to separate, bursitis in hip joint. And to make matters worse, she slipped on the wet floor of a restaurant last night and landed on her tailbone and now has lower back pain. She's an RN and needs to be able to get around. So maybe some flexibility in the bed firmness might be good for her.

I believe Kingsdown can construct a bed for a couple with different firmnesses on each side, for any of you who are looking for that. I don't think they will give you 100 choices per side, however, and obviously you can't change it each night to suit you that day. The sleep number bed is the only one I know of that will let you select the firmness each night.

My husband and I slept on one for a week in a hotel. I didn't like it, he thought it was "okay". We ended up getting a split king adjustable memory foam bed from Costco.com. I love their memory foam mattress but he doesn't. He ended up purchasing a coil mattress to use on his side of the bed. It's worked well for us. The split king adjustable foundation came with 2 mattresses. Even though we ended up buying a 3rd mattress for his side of the bed, in total it was still much less expensive than Tempurpedic.

I purchased from Costco too without even trying it out first. They have a variety of memory foam mattresses from various manufacturers. I paid about $650 for a king sized one inc delivery.
It arrived compressed in a box and once i unpacked it and it expanded i found it had hard ridge down the center.
The manufacturer said that it probably been in the Costco warehouse in a compressed box for too long so they sent me a fresh one. I've had it four years now and love it.

Well, the best part of sleeping on a Select Comfort for 10 plus years is the ability for two individuals to be able to adjust to their comfort level so, having a mattress built with two different levels on each side still misses another best point of the SC design. My good wife has her side set at 35 and I'm at 75, but over the years we have both from time to time changed from those settings. When we travel to good hotels that are known for quality sleep sets we miss our SC. Now ten years of use and still going strong it has cost us less that $180 a year. We do have a good quality topper which may explain why we don't experience the center problems some have. When either of us gets out of bed the other doesn't feel a thing, and it does not heat up under you. Regards

That is true...you can get a different firmness on each side. The mattress store, I think it's Sleepys, has a bed you lay on to calculate your pressure points and give recommendations. Then you lay on a display model to get the feel and it feels great.

Don't know why they don't advertise but I had never heard of Kingsdown before.

Because of the bladder the sleep number bed changes firmness when your partner gets in or out of bed. I found that I sunk down in the middle too much like a hammoc or a horseshoe.

Tempurpedic all the way. The adjustable ones are great and they even make a split model so you don't have to argue with your spouse about having your head elevated, etc.

We've had a Sleep Number bed for a few years and it's very comfortable. My wife likes her side firm and I prefer a softer setting. I've never noticed a ridge down the middle of the mattress. Ours doesn't have a trace of that problem. And there's absolutely no interaction between the bladders either. I don't feel a thing when my wife moves around or gets up. The two sides are Independent and don't seem to affect each other.
