frozen distilled water

Post by newname » Sun Feb 06, 2011 11:32 am

I went to open my truck to put in ice melt and found 2 gallons of frozen distilled water. I must have forgot I bought them. When they finally unthawed, one gallon was only half full. Does water evaporate after its been frozen?
Is it okay to use this water in my humidifier after its been frozen? What would make it evaporate?
I'm not into molecular structure of water!! This may sound silly but I'm serious.

Water that freezes expands and probably over flowed out. Freezing doesn't do anything to it.

I have had this discussion on here before. I almost always have a bottle of water in my car. It freezes overnight, every night, and I have never had a leak or an explosion or a cracked plastic water bottle. Nothing. I wonder if I am just buying this super freaky weird bottled water or something?

The stores here are all out of any kind of bottled water. I didn't think about stocking up. I guess I could just melt some snow.

There was a post on here recently about whether to use frozen distilled or not. Even the point of melting snow was mentioned, iirc.

Whether or not it gets contaminated can be debated but once the bottle gets cracked it is certainly exposed to unwanted germs and bacteria, fwiw.

I wouldn't let my distilled water for my machine freeze. I am talking about the bottle of water I toss in my car on Monday and sip from for a few days while driving. It freezes and never cracks or expolodes, etc.

When water freezes, it expands about 10% by volume, so the bottle will either crack and the remaining unfrozen water will leak out, or it will overflow at the bottle neck.

And, to answer your question, yes, water does evaporate after it freezes. The phenomenon is called sublimation, in which a frozen solid turns to a gas without first becoming a liquid. Dry ice evaporates without turning to liquid. Water ice does the same thing below 32F/0C. Think of hanging your laundry outside on a clothesline to dry. Your sheets and towels will freeze stiff as cardboard, but let them hang out and flap around in the breeze, and even if it's below freezing, they will end up dry. Same phenomenon is at work in your freezer. So-called "freezer burn" happens when frozen items in your freezer lose water to evaporation. Intentionally done, it's called freeze-drying.

TMI, I suppose, but that's the former science teacher in me. Always looking for a student to teach.

Freezing water expands. It depends on how full the bottle is whether the expansion room is there for the amount of water in the bottle. Ever put a bottle of pop in the freezer to cool it quickly, forget it and the time you open the freezer you see the pop exploded and you have some cleaning up to do?? Yup, been there, done that. More than once.
