Is this true? Masks not compatiable?

Post by elmo42 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 1:39 pm

My RT told me that if I had a ResMed machine I can't get a Respironics Mask. Is that correct information? I don't see how the masks could be all that different other than how they feel to the patient. Just asking, I'm a clueless newbie!

I'm not familiar with that mask but my mask isn't the same brand as my bipap. I didn't like the mask of that brand so went with a different one.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!
You're being lied to.......big time.
I'd be very dubious about any information that DME/RT has told or may tell you.

Many/most of us are using different mask/machine combinations that work just fine.

Keep reading here and asking questions. YOU have to take charge of YOUR therapy.

My understanding is that you can use any mask with any machine, same for hoses. But I'm fairly new at this myself, so I could be wrong.

Any mask will work with any machine.

Some of the manufacturers are adding features into their machines which supossedly help taylor the performance of the machine to the specific mask. Of course they only add the ability to select masks that they manufacture for their tayloring feature. Not sure if anyone has found much benefit from matching equipment.

As you can see below, I have a Respironics machine with a ResMed mask. Masks are a very personal and need to be selecte based on how they fit you, not who the manufacturer is...

If you look at the equipment listed for the people posting here, you will find a wide variety.

Keep reading here and you will learn more than your RT will ever tell you.

Good luck,
Dennis

What baloney!

I wonder what kind of incentive or kickback that RT is getting from ResMed???

Or was he/she just too lazy to pull out another mask?

No it is not true. You can use Respironics masks with a Resmed machine. It is true that there are settings on the Resmed S9 that correspond to Resmed masks (it's also true there are settings on a Respironics machine that correspond to Respironics masks), but that doesn't mean you have to use a Resmed mask. I'm not familiar with the details of the mask settings on the S9 (I use a PR System One), but I think there is a "default" setting that can be selected so you can use any mask.

Yep big lie number whatever.

I think during mask selection on your ResMed machine there is "other" for other brands or you can come up with a similar type and go with that. It is only for leak calculation anyway. Example. Swift FX is the nasal pillow type of mask, the Opus 360 and Respironics Optilife is also nasal pillow type. Or just use "other" as the choice. Won't affect therapy.

Been thinking of a "whopper" thread. Think I will go get it started.

My first machine was the old REMstar Pro, with C-flex.....a Respironics machine. My mask was a Mirage Ultra II, which was ResMed. So, not only no, but HECK (self-censored myself there ) no! You can use one company's mask with another's machine.

Rather than select by style of mask, check the literature that comes w/the mask for the allowed vent rate at your set pressure and then compare that to the allowed vent rate of the various Resmed masks and then set the Mask Selection accordingly.

I successfully used the ProBasics Zzz-Mask full face mask w/both my Resmed S8 VPAP Auto and my PR SystemOne BPAP Auto. I set my Mask Selections by the allowed vent rates.

Can a ResMed mask be used with another manufacturer's CPAP device?
It should be fine, but if you're using a non-ResMed APAP or Bi-level device, you may want to check with the manufacturer.
