Gorilla Duct Tape!!!!

Post by TheHappyhoser » Sun Mar 28, 2010 3:49 pm

After 10months and over 8 different FF masks I have found my solution...Gorilla Duct Tape across my mouth, not to high up or the edge will cut into the skin right between your upper lip and nose and either the LT swift nasal or the Opus nasal. WOW! I only wake to get going in the morning from waking 10 times to adjust for a noisy leak! I was not as beat from nearly dying every night for a good part of the last eight years of my life but all the waking up to fix leaks was no fun. No more I say! I have cut down from needing about 10 1/2 hrs sleep pre-hose to about 8hrs. with FF masks to 6hr with new set up and I feel great. To anybody with the problem of mouth breathing placing a strong piece of tape over your mouth is very difficult and you must trust you will breath through your nose I personally used a Xanax at night for a few days and now have been using the tape for 2 months. I've been on here to see others handle their problems and now to all who post I say Thank You for sharing you trails and tribulations. There is a way to make this work if you are just willing to keep at it. So about $575.00 dollars worth of useless FF masks to a simple hose with a couple nasal pillows I sleep and sleep well! Good luck and good night...well it's only 2:45p so just good luck!

Happy........

You might want to experiment with 3M Blue 2" Delicate Release #2080 Painter's Tape.....available at Lowe's paint dept.

It's probably easier to remove than the Gorilla variety.....and I find it prevents my mouth leaks.

I've been using #2080 for over a year....and I love the stuff!

Gorilla Duct Tape would be a very bad idea for use on most faces/mouths.

Try super glue on your lips ... should work almost as good as Gorilla Duct Tape and less expensive too.
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

Dreamstalker....That was a dangerous statement....some people will try anything just because they read it somewhere.

Perhaps you should not believe everything you read regardless of where you read it?

Perhaps you do not know what Gorilla Duct Tape is or that it was a first and only post by the OP?

Perhaps you are not clever enough to realize that I was advising against the duct tape by comparing it to super glue (not because it is dangerous but because using duct tape is STUPID)?

Perhaps taking yourself so serieous and quoting me is just as dangerous?

At the risk of agreeing with anything DS says...it's pretty obvious the OP was no more serious than DS. There have been jokes on here before about getting blue duct tape by mistake when buying painter's tape.

I can't imagine anyone would seriously consider using duct tape...and certainly not more than once. Same goes for super-glue. (It tastes AWFUL!!!)

I tried duct tape about 8 years ago. It worked great for a couple weeks. I was rested and enjoying my sleep. Then I started getting a rash from the adhesive on the duct tape. It got worse and worse until I had to quit using duct tape.

After trying lots of other things I put one of those pillows filled with bean hulls under my chin. I wedge my chin and head tight between the pillow on the back of my head (I sleep on my back) and the bean pillow under my chin, braced against my chest. I also use the respironics deluxe chinstrap. I further make a conscious effort before falling asleep to seal my lips and create a small suction inside my mouth and push my tounge forward against my teeth and up to the roof of my mouth. The suction holds my tounge there. The end result is no mouth leaks.

Gerald also recommended to me and it's perfect! Effective, just enough adhesion without tearing skin and no residual glue, etc the next morning. Make sure you get #2080 and not #2090

Sung to the Harry Nilsson tune:

Brother bought a cpap, because he could not stay awake
Brother got a mask, that attaches to his face.

He put the hose in the mask, and blows air all in his face.
He put the hose in the mask, but the air, it don't stay in place.

You put the Polident on the mask and stick it to your face.
You stick the mask on your face, the air, it stays in place.
With the mask stuck on his face,
he called the doctor in the morning
and woke him all up....

And he say
"Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take for the this pain in my face,"
he say
"Doctor, ain't there nothing I can do to relieve this headache,"
he say
"Doctor, ain't there nothing I can do to get this mask off my face."

Doctor, he say,
"...now let me get this straight."
"You put the Polident on the mask, that goes on your face....
and you stuck the mask in it's place,
and now you want to know....
how to get the mask unstuck from your face."

Doctor, he say,
"you such a silly guy!"
"You put the Polident on the mask, that goes on your face....
and now the mask is part of you.
Yes, you can call me in the morning....
with this mask stuck to you.....
just don't call me in the morning...
and tell me you used Gorilla glue."
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.

Love the song, carbonman!

I quite understand why people try duct tape, Polident, etc. Me, never had the guts to try Polident, but I tried surgical tape and ace bandages before settling on gauze from those 3-inch rolls. Combined with my chin strap, the gauze is enough to keep my mouth shut (unless I sleep sitting up or have a bad head cold).

I'm forever grateful to the kind person who posted a tip about using gauze - I was truly desperate after spending months trying to adjust to a full-face mask, but I never could tolerate the pressure (aka pain) and the leaks. Now I can use my beloved Swift nasal pillows again.

It also helped that I went in for a second sleep study and learned that my pressure was too high - it was causing "lip blow-out". Since I knew that gauze worked for me, I was able to resist YET ANOTHER full-face mask from the clinic after that study. (My insurance should thank me...)

My message: Keep tweaking and keep trying things until you get the right solution. It's worth it!!!!

I'm posting this on June 9, 2011. I did a Google search specifically about using duct tape if you're a mouth breather. He is not stupid and it certainly isn't funny. If you had been through what I have since 2008, you would find most of these replies not to be very funny.
I started out with a full face Fisher and Pakel sleep style. Then to an Avio TSD with nocturnal oxygen set at 2 liters per minute. I tried this for nine months and that failed.
In 2009 I started using a Resmed elite II with EPR using a swift nasal pillow. I tried every chinstrap that I could find, and all of them made me feel like my head was locked in a vice.
About this time I was about ready to give up on CPAP because I'm a mouth breather.
Then I tried a Resmed liberty Mirage. This was a combination mass with nasal pillows in covering the mouth. This mask was very poorly designed. The nasal pillows were too flimsy and kept blowing out of my nose. I really was ready to give up. And now all the course of the last year I've been using a Resmed Quattro full face mask. I wear dentures and to have any permanent teeth. I had to get rid of my mustache but it still leaks.
And then today I come up with the brilliant idea of using some kind of duct tape to keep my mouth shut. I have used guerrilla tape in the past for many projects. And it's a good product.
Well, tonight is the first night that I'm going to use the duct tape with my old swift nasal pillows.
I've had to make modifications to every mask that I have ever used. Extra Velcro straps and a hell of a lot of patience. I have been compliant with my CPAP for 1200 hrs. since 2009. And because of mask leaks, today June 9, 2011 I am in as bad shape as I was when I started in 2008.
I went to sleep doctors, and they've all given me the same impression that all you have to do is go on CPAP and all your hypersomnia justs goes away. That is an absolute lie. If the tracheotomy was not so painful, I would have already done that by now. Six hours after I wake up, I am falling asleep dropping plates of food on my lap. Not only is this sleep apnea industry and the DME's, are ripping us off. I just fired my present sleep Dr. because when I saw a month ago he just didn't get it. He thought everything was just fine and reschedule me for 10 more months. Also, I have been battling insomnia and broken sleep for the last three years. I live in Columbus Ohio area. In two weeks I'm going to the Cleveland clinic where they have many specialists that can treat and diagnose many different kinds of sleep disorders. So don't make fun of the guy who posted this in the first place.

Yep. Duct tape. It works. Back in '06 I was tried all different brands that I could find at the hardware store. Ended up selecting all purpose duck brand duct tape; it stuck all night, no leaks and no problems. Blue painters tape would not stick.

For some reason, I have not met many other people who could tolerate real duct tape. Congrats on finding something that works. If it works, go for it.

When I found out that Vicks works on toenail fungus,
I casually mentioned to DH that it was just a matter of time until somebody tried it on jock itch.
I thought he understood I was NOT suggesting HE try it--until I heard the shouting from the bathroom.

OMG I can just imagine.... My DH took me out for hot wings last weekend and we do like them hot. Time to leave and long drive home so pee break before we leave town. He tells me that this is the time he always washes hands first...
something about learning this lesson the hard way several years ago.

Vicks does work wonders for toenail fungus and have learned handwashing is very important.

I do wonder about chemicals used in duct tape and would be very carefull about using it on my face. I have heard duck tape is used to remove planters warts. Painter's tape did not work for me, I found that the tape did not allow air movement through the tape (did not breath). I would sweat when I used it and it would slide around. Gental paper tape works best for me. Everyone needs to experiment and will eventually find what works best for them and what they can tolerate.
