Post by squid13 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:19 am

Does anyone take small douses of Amitriptyline and Benadryl at Bedtime? If so how does it work?

Not I.
I just mask up, lie down, and conk out.

I take Benedryl at bedtime to help me stay asleep. For me, it works reasonably well.

Are you asking for people that take both medications? I can only give you my experience with the one of the two you mentioned.

I'm asking if anyone takes both. I' love to lie down and conk out but I wake 3 to 4 times a night so my sleep is fractured. I take 20 MG of Amitriptyline and it helps with my aches and pains but it doesn't keep me asleep so I thought if I took some Benadrly it might work.

Gotcha! I take at bedtime, in addition to the benedryl:

Gabapentin
Tramadol
Advil

My pain is controlled with the above meds but the benedryl was needed because I was waking up anywhere from 4-10 times a night. I still wake up, but not quite as often and not as fully, so going back to sleep IS easier.

I hope you can get some input about your specific medication questions.

Ihave used Amitriptyline for sleep. I started at 25mg and the doctor increased it to 50mg because I was having night terrors when I first started CPAP. I rarely take it now.
Diagnosed 08/31/10. Titration 9/02/10. Started CPAP 11/01/10. Auto mode 10-15cm. Alternate mask GoLife for her. Back up mask Full-life full face w/Pad-a-cheek mask liner. Comtec CMS F50 wrist pulse oximeter. Sobakawa Cloud Pillow, Sleepyhead software

both cause drowsiness...we knew that.
something about cholinergic which I don't understand

Says to monitor closely. In the small doses that you would be taking I probably wouldn't be afraid to take it.
I currently take a combination that has a much stronger warning than "monitor closely".
Best thing of course is to ask doctor for final say so.

Benadryl and men with enlarged prostrate might be a problem...just thought I would bring that up.

Benadryl, though it makes me sleepy and fall asleep, wakes me up and makes me very restless for the rest of the night.

have any of you noticed any major changes in your number when you take the amytriptylyne? I take 75MG, and I noticed that my AHI went WAY up, and the next day, I felt like I didn't get any sleep the night before

I haven't seen any difference in numbers at all but then I only take a small dose 25 mg at bedtime.
No particular pattern that is obvious with or without meds.

If you really think it is the meds then don't take it for a week...monitor data...then take it for a week and compare.
Need more than a night or two though to establish a pattern.

I only take 20 mg at bedtime and I take it for pain relief so if it did go up a little I wouldn't stop it cause the benefit is worth a little jump in AHI. So far though I haven't seen any rise in AHI. Making you sleepy is just a nice side effect.

I take a dose of Nyquil nightly as a sleep aide and helps with nasal congestion too.
