CPAP and Air China Carry On Rules

Post by mah1603 » Mon Jul 16, 2012 3:44 pm

Good afternoon everyone,
Have be viewing this site since I started CPAP 1 year ago and with my upcoming trip to China (we are adopting a little girl), have used it to prep my equipment for the trip. Lots of good info out there.

Found out today that all of our internal China flights will be on Air China and they don't allow CPAP to be carried on (at least this is what their North America rep told me). I must check it. Has anyone else fly on Air China inside mainland China and run into this issue? If need be, I may be buying a heavy duty carry case tonight.

You bring up an interesting point - any flights not connecting to or from the US can have much different rules but I can't imagine why they would prohibit cpap just as a carry-on. I can understand if they would prohibit the use of cpap during a flight esp. IF their planes cannot accommodate the power needed.

How many internal flights do you have planned?

Do keep us advised upon your return just how it went.

3 internal China flights:
Beijing to Zhengzhou
Zhengzhou to Guangzhou
Guangzhou to Hong Kong
Delta is being used from/to the US (no issues with Delta)

I could tell the CS Rep did not know what a CPAP is and even after explaining it (and told him it would not be used in flight) the answer was no carry on, only checked.
Will be making room in my carry on bag for the ResMed9.
This will make the trip very interesting.

I'd call back and talk to someone different!

Then get their name and time called ... Ask if they could direct you to where it can be found in writing.

I have found much better service from foreign air carriers, than US! Korean, Swiss, Lot ...

Air China? Tell them its medical equipment.

Also their rules are subject to talking nice since the TSA isn't involved.

Jay Leno just mentioned a flight being delayed in China for 3 days. Pack a lunch

I just called Air China. After explaining what a CPAP is and waiting on hold awhile, I was told I could carry it on as part of my carry-on allowance but not to use during the flight. (Unlike domestic American flights where it is not counted as part of your carry-on allowance.) But at least Air China did not say it had to be checked luggage.

Now that makes more sense.
Have a pleasant and uneventful flight!
Congratulations on your new daughter.

Make sure your seat isnt over the black box. This thread is almost 2 years old, I hope the plane arrived ok. Jim
