hot breath annoying
hot breath annoying
Must admit I love the c-pap (after whining and refusing for many months) but I am annoyed and disturbed by my own hot breath bouncing off the inside of the mask. I have the humidifier at 1 but Arizona's super dry air really demands added humidity so I don't feel I can turn if off. Anyway, the air coming in doesn't feel warm at all--it is only my own exhale that makes it hot inside the masl. Yes, I'm a mouth-breather when asleep.
I do have a small mask as I couldn't tolerate the bigger ones that brace on the forehead.
Does anyone have suggestions--or even better a solution--for this stupid problem? I had a pulmonary function test today and asked the tech about this. I was told he's never heart of such a thing.
The hot air in mask makes it hard to get to sleep and sometimes wakes me up.
Thanks for any ideas.

Re: hot breath annoying
Sorry I don't have any experience with that as I use a pillows style mask. Just wondering, do you breath through your mouth when awake also? If you are able to breathe through your nose and it's not obstructed or badly deviated, there's a chance you could train yourself to stop mouth breathing. I was a mouth breather before cpap and used a chin strap for the first year or two on cpap before realizing I didn't even need the chin strap any longer. I really wanted to make the pillows style mask work because when it's in place I can't even feel any air moving either way except thru the vent. Maybe someone else will have some input to help with your current mask.

Re: hot breath annoying
You might want to try the RespCare Hybrid. It is nasal pillow plus a mouth cover. It comes with 3 sizes each of nasal pillows and mouth pillows so it fits most faces.
Exhaled air is always going to be warm - body temperature - your lungs and nasal passages warm up the air and add moisture to it.

The solution is to cool the room with a\c, I keep mine at 64 degrees summer and winter, I also don't use water in the HH or heat of course...

You can't cool down your own breath. It sounds like your ramp time is too long causing you to feel "stuffiness" inside the mask. A little more detail...what pressure your on, mask type....Does it cover your nose or nose and mouth, will help us to give you a little more direction.

No. If I am out in -30C weather my breath coming out is still body temperature and humid so that it causes crystallization on my hood.Goofproof wrote:The solution is to cool the room with a\c, I keep mine at 64 degrees summer and winter, I also don't use water in the HH or heat of course...

Re: hot breath annoying
I was a drooling mouth breather too until CPAP. Now I find that I'm usually quite able to breath through my nose and that I don't open my mouth a lot. No more hacking up dried crap in the morning.
The best for this was the nasal pillows so far. I found the nasal mask still difficult to handle but the pillows work nicely, and being so small they don't force me to breath my own nastiness.
So even being a mouth breather, you might give a nose mask a try.

Re: hot breath annoying
True your breath is heated as a byproduct of living. Colder air in a room will result in colder output of the air in a xpap mask. That air will lower the temp in the mask, problem solved. You can't do much to control your body temp, but room air you can control. Re: hot breath annoying
I have the same problem, when I breath out, I feel the hot breath go out. When I breath in, I breath in the hotness of my breath and it stinks (no matter how many times I brush my teeth). I feel like I am not getting enough fresh oxygen. I do not breath out of my mouth, but did try only breathing in my nose and out my mouth and the problem went away...but I can't sleep breathing out of my mouth, I am forced to breath out of my nose. I do remember when they did my sleep test they based my oxygen levels according when I was sick with broncitis. I was sick for a month and when I finally got over it, I realized that I needed more air or something because I could no longer sleep with it. I did not go into much detail when I told the doctor, but he said if it continues, to let him know. I can not sleep with it until it get fixed no matter how hard I try. I am really wondering if it could be bad for you in some ways because you breath in your own air which are gases which could harm your organs? I mean, it is not like most of the air leaves even though there is vents. It is just not enough ventilation or I need more air. Good luck to ya.

Re: hot breath annoying
The hot air is coming from your humidifier, most nasal passages prefer hot humid air. If it stinks it is because either you haven't clean the humidifier or you are not using distilled water.Guest wrote:I have the same problem, when I breath out, I feel the hot breath go out. Since you can't be bothered to tell us your equipment we don't know what kind of mask you are using. If it is a nasal mask of some sort, opening your mouth to breathe is dooming your therapy.

Re: hot breath annoying
Or it might stink if you haven't cleaned your mask regularly.
I've actually seen my breath inside my mask (same as when you exhale outside and the temp is cold.) I found lowering the temperature on my humidifier helped cool down my breathing passages a bit so I didn't feel my hot breath reflecting back in my face by my mask.
