Alarm on Respironics BiPap beeping all night

Post by jddg » Sat Feb 08, 2014 9:46 am

My husband was brought a different machine last night from Apria. (He had been using a ResMed VPAP ST-A.) He was brought a Philips Respironics BiPap Auto SV Advanced System One. He was in bed for 2 minutes and the alarm on the unit starting beeping. He would push the button to make it go off and before he was even sleeping (another 2 minutes later) it went off again. It was awful... It beeped all night. And the company is closed on Saturdays and Sundays so we have nobody to call. Does anyone know how to shut that alarm off for the next 3 nights until we can talk to a sleep technician? The red button become red and the screen says "apnea". He is not even sleeping yet so he is not needing a reminder to breath. Is there a way to shut it off so he can sleep for a few nights? The owners manual does not tell us anything about what to do...

I don't have an answer for you as I am not familiar with that machine. I thought I would reply just to *bump* your question back to the top so others who do know might see it.

I have my fingers crossed that you already found an answer!

he can either breath a little faster or
change the bpm to match his rate

If you can get access to the clinician menu, set the Breaths per Minute rate to auto and turn the Apnea Alarm to some reasonable value like 20 seconds.
The DME has likely set the BPM rate to some fixed value that is higher than he is actually breathing and left the alarm set to 0.

BPM - This screen allows you to modify the Breaths Per Minute setting.
You can choose between Off, Auto, or 4 through 30 in 1 BPM increments.

Apnea alarm - This feature detects the cessation of spontaneous breathing.
You can enable or disable the alarm by choosing 0 (off), 10, 20, 30, or 40 seconds.
The alarm will sound when the time between patient-triggered breaths is greater or equal to the specified setting.

Bipap alarms can be turned off. Minimum minute ventilation can be set to off.

THANKS everyone for your help. I got access to the clinician menu and I was able to enable or disable the alarm. I am very happy with the machine now that the alarm does not go off all night long! This community website is FANTASTIC!!!

call the DME where you got the machine, I think there's a way to silence the machine so it won't have those alarms. Sometimes it will set off an alarm if your mask is leaking.
