ICON auto CPAP machine

Post by dbolt75 » Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:46 am

Anyone here have one? Do you like it? I used a Fisher and Paykel sleepseries200 for 5 years and was very happy with it, so I would like to stick with them since I trust them. Anyone else use one? Are you happy with it? Thanks.

There are a few forum members using the F & P Icon Auto. Most seem happy with it. I know of one person who was not happy with it. That's the way it goes in cpap land because not everyone is happy with everything.

Not a huge number and not all active on the forum. A couple of recent members though that may be still around.

I have never used a F & P machine so I am no help. Sorry. You might be able to search the forum for threads where the member mentions using the Icon. I don't know how well the search function will work with "ICON" as the search...it might work. I know it won't work for 3 letter words.

I used an Icon Auto for a couple years, but have replaced it with an S9.

Things I liked about the Icon:
1) Size (vertical vs. horizonal layout - less table space)
2) Clock/Alarm

Things i did not like:
1) Icon does not have exhale relief
2) Constant Heating - used a LOT of water compared to my S9 - didn't realize how much until switching machine...the S9 is a miser in comparison.
3) Constant Heating - tank would require cleaning/sterilizing often to avoid musty smell (this does not happen on the S9)
4) Software

I like my Icon auto. I have never used an other machine so I have nothing to compare it with. I treat all my machines equally. If my car starts and gets me where I am going, if the climate controls effectively heat and cool, if the windshield wipers wipe and the sound system makes pleasing sounds then there is nothing else I could want. My Icon has worked everyday.

I have had two Icon machines since they first came out, one was just cpap and the second one is the Auto machine. Both are great machines, no problems, and I would buy another. Excellent humidification system, very comfortable to breath on. I also use an S9 and both have pros and cons, but I think of them as equals unless you are data centric in which case I give the nod to the S9. However if you are not as concerned with very detailed data then I actually prefer the "breathing experience" of the Icon...it's very comfortable to use on a nightly basis. I am a person that does not care much for the exhale relief features on most machines so that is not a deal breaker for me on the Icon machine. I actually think the S9 over reports central apneas so I don't give a lot of credence to the data in some respects -- the Icon reports AHI, leaks, hypopneas and all the most important data, it does not report centrals, or it may lump centrals into the hypopneas or maybe lumps them into something else, but as I mentioned that since I think the S9 over reports centrals and I know centrals are not an issue for me I pretty much ignore some of that type of data anyway. If you got along well with your previous F&P machine you will probably like the Icon even more.

As one previous response indicated that the humidifier continues to heat all the time that is really not the case, what is happening there is the power converter is built into the unit just under the humidifier tub so the heat he is speaking of is simply the warmth of the power converter when it is plugged into wall outlet. Two advantages are that there is no brick in the power line so it is easier to pack and travel with, the other advantage is the warmth from the converter can be used as a pre-warmer for the humidification system so you don't get blast of cold air when you start using the machine at night, it is comfy warm right off the bat. If you don't like the warmth from the converter all the time simply unplug it from the wall socket when not in use...no big deal.

We have put out a few ICON cpap machines on patients. I have not heard any complaints from them and all of them seemed generally satisfied. Most of them were first time cpap users so they had nothing to compare it to but I do recall a few being past cpap users and they seemed ok with the ICON. If you had F&P in the past I dont think you will be disappointed.

I recommend the better ResMed S9 or A10 models, or the Philips Respironics PRS1 machines. Check the links in my signature line for more info. Some of these machines are "bricks" that don't monitor the effectiveness of your therapy. The good models in these lines are very good.

People here are very familiar with the PRS1 and ResMed S9 machines.

I forget, but doesn't the Icon lack airflow waveforms or some of the other data points the ResMed and PRS1 machines have?

DeVilbiss doesn't do airflow/wave form but I think the Icon does offer them. What I don't think the Icon does is flag Centrals separately. Kind of a deal breaker for me but that's just me and the fact that other machines do flag them so I want it. I want everything I can get in terms of data available even if I don't really need it.
Might sound like I am data obsessive when I'm not. I don't put my reports under the microscope like that and/or dwell on each little breath or event but I just want the ability to do that if I wanted to.

I got an Icon a few months ago after having respironics m series for years. The icon is very quiet. I like the heated hose. I never have vapor accumulation. It has a smaller footprint. Easy to use. I like it much better than my old machine
